Your thoughts on removing distortion (inc SAMPLE)

You may be able to soften it slightly with careful eq, but ultimately the answer is no, you can't remove distortion and keep the desired audio.
 
One of so many reasons why I'm always hounding people about headroom and proper tracking levels...

There are "de-clippers" and "de-cracklers" and miscellaneous restoration tools out there, but they're a shot in the dark on a good day.
 
unfortunately for that kind of audio abuse there's no medicine....
it's like chopping off hands and the trying to do something about it,
as John said - keep big headroom, record 24 bits - and stop worrying about loudness
