Analogue Enthusiast
Hi,

I sing mostly to pre-recorded music (karaoke tracks) :o I only concentrate on my vocals and want to do the best job I can in respect to capturing my voice as accurately and naturally as possible with a natural, dynamic vocal etc. Ok, I'm going to give you a link to a song I did a vocal for and I ask for your criticism. (The song may not be everyones cup of tea but please just critique it on a technical recording basis only). I used the following equipment:

(1) POP FILTER (2) AT 4033 (3) ART TUBE MP (4) RNC (5) TASCAM 414 MK2 (6) LEXICON MPX 100.

PLEASE NOTE: You may hear a little hiss as a result of me hooking the tascam to the line in of my soundcard. I plan on buying a cd recorder and so the hiss will be no more. So please disregard this hiss problem as I'm aware of it.

Ok, here's the link:

Thank you in advance :)

Nice vocal....there seemed to be some way in the red levels at times, which distorted just a bit to my ears...nobody else might hear it that way, could be these speakers.....gibs

wow.

gotta love the sound of that voice.
I also heard the clipping especially in the right ear

Awesome Vocals.

That put an involuntary curl in my upper lip.

Uh-huh, uh-huh ;)

Man..Definitely not my bag.. But that's heartbreaking vocals... Gotta love the obligatory talk at the end...

I too hear some sound that seems to be in the "red" area..

Here's the main thing.. You gotta EQ that reverb, or use a Lowpass Filter somehow... way too much sizzling.. a LPF at ~3 KHz usually makes it sound way more natural..

Overall: Great sound man!!

The song itself and that whole EQ scene and the whole pushed-past-zero-to-tape sound would bring a tear to the eye of my friend Bob whose country music from Newfoundland I've previously posted.
There was significant tape noise going on, though.

Thank you gibs ! Yeah, there was a bit of distortion but not too bad I guess. I was trying to minimize the role of a compressor and set it to a very minimum threshold level and so that's the reason for the distortion I guess. But thank you again for listening :)

Thank you for your response ! Yeah, I had to attach my Tascam to the "line in" of my cheap soundcard and thus the noise borneth ;) Thanks again for the post :)

Yeah, it's not everyone's type of music but Thank You for listening and your positive comments :) One question ... What did u mean by "You gotta EQ that reverb, or use a Lowpass Filter somehow... way too much sizzling.. a LPF at ~3 KHz usually makes it sound way more natural.." ? Would I be better off with the Tascam 424 MK3 (has mid EQ) to correct some of these probs ? Thanks again :)

If I missed anyone else's reply to my post then I apologize. Thank you all who responded ! :)

What I ment is that there is, In my opinion, way too much high frequencies in the reverb. If you can filter those out, it'll sound more natural.

Oh, ok, thanks ! I'll probably need a Mid Sweep EQ for this.
