ahhh we all love the RE20 and the SM7, and everyone knows how the 57 can be useful, but what other mics that can be had (ebay, etc) for under 100? Wierd ones are welcome, I'm looking to get some new sound for the studio without droppin' tons on an re20 or sm7.

ones I have had (unlikely?) success with:

AKG 190e
Fender P51(awesome awesome on toms, for me anyhoo)
RE50 (I think it was an re50, it was a something 50-omni dynamic)

Since weird is welcome: the Sennheiser MD21. Small brother of the MD421, with a similar look BUT with a fixed omni partern and no other controls. Sounds great on my guitar amp! Can be had for under 100 bucks on ebay.

Sennheiser e609s (list $99 new)

I just got an RE-16 for like 85 or something... I have to say that this mic is high quality stuff. I've only tried it on my voice but I was shocked at how... I don't even know how to describe it but it's extremely pleasant. Thanks Chessrock for the suggestion.

M201 (£90... But only from Germany)

Used mics

Another M201 (about £75)
AKG D321 (free)
M101 (£45)
EV 635A (£30)
M400 (£45)
ATM25 (£60)

AKG D3600, extremely versitile dynamic. It was a pleasant find indeed. :)

Another vote for the Sennheiser E609s and EV 635A. I'd add the Shure 545 and 565 too. If you want REALLY low cost, the Sennheiser E815S is pretty good, at around $34 each (new!).

AT 41a.

Its AT's version of 58 but it is still not going to be the same.

I'm with Mark - Beyer M400 used for £35.

Also, Sennheiser E835 (only about £60 here so gotta be under a ton there).

I really like the audix i5. Have used it mostly on snare and electric guitar, but it's nice and full sounding, with a much better sounding low end than my 57. In fact my 57 was my roomates who is moving away and instead of getting another one, I just got another i5.

Another vote for the Shure 565 series. Or, really, any Unisphere mic. They pretty much act like an SM58 and have almost identical response curves.

BLUE Ball anyone?

"Dynamic transducer with active"Class-A" phantom-powered solid-state circuitry" - aren't there any other active dynamic microphones? Using pre it would look like possible to build a dynamic with lighter pickup and hence more open highs.

"RØDE D-PowerMic - the worlds first active dynamic microphone!
The worlds first live performance handheld dynamic microphone to feature
active electronics.

Specifi cally designed for live performance in high SPL systems. D-PowerMic features a hyper Cardioid polar pattern, ultra light diaphragm and Neodymium magnet. Coupled to this transducer is a 48 V phantom powered internal instrumentation amplifier.

This unique confi guration provides the ultimate in rugged sound quality,
feedback rejection and reliable dynamic microphone performance, capable of driving very long cable runs with negligible losses."

Rode is also making separate phantom-powered preamp to be plugged right into mic XLR connection (D-Powerplug), and a special DIY electronics set to be installed inside microphone body (RØDE D-Power - Pre-Amplifier)!

It's not a dynamic..in fact I'm not really sure what it is exactly. Back electret condenser mebbe? But....

Radio Shack PZM :)

I've had one for ...ever...and I love it.

Incidentally, I was really shocked when I found out how much they cost these days....dunno if RS still make em, but Crown Audio do one for a crazy price.

Mine's one of the old, original square models..not the (inferior) "bat-shaped" version.

Me EV RE-10 is great! The pope and elvis used it, and it's rad on horns.

AKG D320B, D770
EV N/D257
Sennheiser e835, e609s-Richie
