Your average RMS level?

I am going through the mastering process on our CD. It has been a trial and error experience, but we're making much progress. Originally, I mastered all the songs at around -12.00dB AVG. RMS (and when I did the analysis I selected from like the first chorus on, to stay consistent in getting the loudest sections). I analyzed some Bon Jovi songs at -10.XX rms and the Cranberries at believe it or not, -8.XX rms.

Just curious as to what YOU shoot for as far as AVG. RMS LEVEL of your CD. Thank you :)

RMS is not a parameter that has to do with dB levels. but for spl I offer -3db

Hi Darrin,
sorry, never heard of spl, I must be losing it :) I'm referring to the AVEREAGE RMS (root means square). If your average is -3 your wave would be just about a solid brick wall of noise and no dynamics. Maybe youre referring to your PEAK RMS? What is SPL? Thanks Darrin. Anyone else?

You use your ears to master with, not numbers.................!

RMS is associated with power output from amplifiers. It sounds like your going off 0dB Full Scale hence the -3/-12/-8 dB FS levels of the signal.

If you master by RMS numbers instead of ears you have (at least) one big problem:

Your softer ballad type tunes will have the same RMS as your loud kick-ass tunes. The end result will be that your kick ass tunes will sound wimpy and won't kick ass at all!
