While messing around with all of my new equipment a fly landed on my microphone, next thing you know a kind of flyish song emerged. I turned the gain up really high while the fly was moving on top of the mic, hope you can hear the little bugger. :D

I've been toying around with this for learning purposes and I've gotten really bored with this, so it's time to move on. Let me know where I'm going wrong so that my next tune will be easier on the ears. :)

So what mic did you use on the fly? The flies I've tracked have generally preferred a U87, but of course each fly is different. The SM7 can be nice on a fly who's got sibilace problems. So much of it is mic technique, but man, try to get a fly to understand that. Like talking to a brick wall.

You might boost the compression on the fly's track to bring it up just a little in the mix, and less reverb will bring it closer still.

Flies rule.

There's a slight buzz at the end, just after the last "you're a larva no more".

:D

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Very dry mix. Kind of a cool, offbeat tune. Reminds me of Tom Petty.

Sometimes, if I can't get a fly to settle down and focus on getting a good take, I just kind of bend his wings and squash a couple of his legs. That way he'll stay put and get the job done.

fly mic'ing tricks

I keep a small bottle of sugar syrup in the studio and occasionally use a dab of it on a mic grill to help the fly keep focused and to keep them from moving out of the "dialed in" mic position.

I'm waiting for it to download. In the meantime, I just want to say thank you for providing the jpeg. I had no idea what a fly looked like. Now, I'm sure I'll understand the song better.

You got a really cool voice. Man, I thought I tended to sound like Jagger sometimes. You really sound like Mick when he sings well. This tune can be cool if you developed it. What you have is already really cool.

Cool song. The staccato gtr chords at :10 are a little strident at that level, so maybe they could be just a bit lower level. Not much lower though. He vocal is great. Snare level's good but the rest of the set could come up a little IMO.

I really like your vocal style/sound you are getting here.Cool arrangment and nice clear guitar tones here.I dig it!

Thanks for the tips and comments... I may be able to tweek it a little more though I'm ready to shelve this one for awhile.

LOL!

Most of my vocalists must be flies, then... :)

Yeah, this is what I'm always thinking while working on something. I have a very bad habit of working on a tune for awhile then I'll eventually drop the song in disgust or the boredom factor seeps in. Most of the time I just come up with a song or theme music for the day and by tomorrow it will be forgotten.

That is when I decided to start getting my ideas recorded before they disappear with the sunset. Just simply hit the record button, sit in front of the mic, and you've got a song... yeah, right. :D This simple couple of minute piece has taken months of learning things that had nothing to do with actually playing music. (The one man band thing is a pain.)

Finally, I'm to the point where I can walk upstairs and start recording without referring to the manual. So this is the first song that was spurted out of my hand me down mac and was more of a learning tool. Hopefully I can get a sound up to par with a lot of people on this site, including yourself.
