Hey, when I searched I couldn't find what I was looking for, but it's a really simple question. Many of you say to record a bass guitar directly in, right? Well are you putting it through and amp mod? Or is it like plugging the bass guitar into my hi-z inputs on my mackie onyx?

If you use an amp mod or some other effects or something, care to share what you prefer? Likewise, if for sake of time, I decide to do guitat direct in, which line 6 box was everyone talking about before?

Thanks.

Ah nice to see a fellow st. louis guy on here. I only record bass direct in due to the fact my room would have waaaaayyy to much bass build up. If the bass player likes his tone I leave it clean and just eq a little to taste. If he's going for something else then I either pull out amplitube or sansamp, both work decent on bass, though I'd never use them on a di'd guitar, well I'd never di a guitar. Also the line 6 box you're talking about is probably the pod.

I record direct for guitar and bass . For bass a sansamp works well. Your direct input on your mackie will work well also.( I have a 800r) For guitars I use a Boss GT 8 and it also works well. When recording a live project theres no bleed though on drums which is nice. Plus you can easily add more guitar tracks usind a amp later. Other than that, It's all good!!!

bass direct can be as simple as plugging it straight into the 1/4" inputs.
i don't know the onyx, but often it makes the bass sound better if you run it thru a direct box (or DI) first.
i use a di box called "sans amp" because it has eq and distortion..... but any will do. (some are definitely better than others)
bass is a strange beast, what sounds less than perfect will sometimes mix the best.

80% of the time: Groove Tubes The Brick DI/Pre - sounds great

20% of the time: Blend DI with miked amp

Hey guys. Thanks a lot. I just figured it was too simple to be true, figured there was something I was over looking, ha. And JonnyC it sure is DAMN nice to see another STL person, I was wondering if there were any one here! ha.

i only record bass direct in for scratch tracking. When it comes time to record the final take, i set up our speaker mic and record it that way. Much more natural sound than direct in. I am aware that this is contrary to the way a lot of guys on here record.
