..........I've listened to sooo many of you talented peeps who post their slammies here,many of which are truly impressive (including several tunes produced,performed and recorded by members here with minimal gear) and then listen to the utter GARBAGE played on the radio constantly every day! Rite here in this FORUM
ya' got TRUE musicians who present their creations that would absolutely KRUSH most of BillBoards Top 100! D@@@mmmn Dawgs!!!! It's a cryin' shame talents here can't be showcased for the public as much as the commercial carnage out there that passes for moo-sic! Don't ever give up that hope and keep on creatin' till ya' can't create no mo'!!!

yeah, I'm so impressed with some (most) of the music I hear from people on this board, I can't believe the labels aren't looking in here. I suck compared to most of the people I listen to, my ego got really small after I discovered the clinic.

As long as we enjoy the art of making music, it's worth it though. the labels would probably just destroy the true art anyway.

I kinda think some of the guys here are too good for radio, since radio represents something crappy around here anyway :D Radio makes people do crap sometimes, and it usually prevents people composing songs they REALLY would do, so they just write what they think people would like or what people expect to hear. Of course, radio isn't the only thing to do that, but it usually enforces that kind of thinking.
 
I don't travel much, just 3 miles to work and back, ( except in Aug.) he he, and that's the only time I listen to radio. Then it's on a country station. At home I listen to dtb, old and new, and I listen to YOU GUYS AND GALS here. If I listen to a cd or have one on for background it's always good bluegrass. Now, to the point. I agree with ya'll, radio sucks, or at least what i hear sucks. My wife listens mostly to oldies stations and that works for me too. But some of the newer stuff is piss. But then I spend all my time either here or in my studio when not cutting grass, so maybe it's me. he he he he

Radio Sucks!

I don't know about where all of you guys live, but where I live, here in So. Cal, the radio is just as bad! I actually find myself listening to talk radio more than the "Music" stations because at least you get something interesting out of it, and it always changes, or I'll listen to a CD of an artist that I like who is never played on the radio.

The oldies stations here play the same 10 worn out songs (If I have to listen to "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" again, I'll throw up ... and that is no disrespect to the great Phil Spector, it's just that the song is so worn out) ... our Alternative stations play the same 10 "alternative -- ya right'" songs every day. It all sucks!

Even MTV which used to be inventive and creative when it began has gone the way of the radio -- crap! (except for The Osbourns which I find truly funny)

The musicians on this forum are doing it for the love of music and because there is not a lot of corporate music shit to interfere, everyone here gets to stay true to their vision. There are a lot of different levels of musicianship and recording techniques, but they all have something to contribute and I feel that this forum and the musicians here is one of the best kept secrets around -- I think corporate would just destroy what is going on here anyway...

I've been downloading most songs that come through this forum,burning them to cd and listening to them in my truck.I can say my favorite musical genre would be "Home Recorded ".I don't comment very often as I think there are more qualified people than me to do this in this forum.
I really love the variety and surprises I get when I download the files and burn the cd blindly without previewing the files.:cool:
 
The problem with alot of radio-to me-is that it caters to your average Joe six pack-who considers loving music a phase of adolescence. So the radio station chooses its market-and plays what was popular during johnny barbeque's childhood. Everyone's happy right?

Wrong! I think in general this stifles the general music scene. The stuff you hear on "new" music stations, is usually just a slight change from what was popular 2 months ago, approved by some suit and tie. When tastes shift enough that the new artist doesnt sound new anymore-cut him loose! No biggie!

Is there hope? Yes! Places like this affirm that the artist will struggle to make his music-and there are people who want to hear it too! College radio also does a great service: people who like music-digging for the stuff that is new and diverse-If you have a college near you-I suggest turning that dial to the left till you find them, you may have to put up with alot you don't like-but its inspirational to hear the shear quantity of diverse music that people are making. Now get out there and kick some ass!!lol

Up here in the sticks (northern NY), there are about 6 (yes, 6!!!)top-40 country stations, an oldies station, and your classic rock crap...I, like some of you, listen to NPR most of the time, though I like Acid's idea of making a CD of downloads from this site. I'll have to try that. Mostly, when I listen to music in the car, I stick to old blues and stuff you would only hear on college radio stations, if at all on the radio.

Think of all your favorite bands -- their best albums are usually the first few, before they succumb to the pressures of mainstream radio. Once they get a top-40 hit, they're done with, in my opinion.

So, I take it that releasing the NWR station would be a good thing? Given that you absolutely will not hear the same song in 24 hours, and possibly not a whole week or month, and EVERY song is something you may have never heard, because it's so damn new, and possibly not even released?

The internet is the one thing that pisses off the record companies more than anything. I made my own website. Nothing too flash. Just a few pictures of the veggies and you can download my music video free from the front page and click in deeper to find some more of my songs. Again free for download. And not one sing banner add or advertising crap anywhere. When my music video was first up on my site (september 2001) I sent links to cgchannel, pocket movies, MTV, channel V, and many others. The first week It was downloaded by over 50000 people with amaisingly good feedback (email) except for a few comments. But thats two gold records in the old money. So with all this evidence and hype I took the songs and video and shopped around to as many of the big record companies here in Australia. And none of them would even talk to me. Nothing. Not even on the phone. Its like this big wall between us and them.
So Im here to say to all the big record companies of the world - "YOUR LOSS".
I very soon gave up the record company chase and am much happier just getting back to music and animation. Whenever someone says to me "man, you should get this stuff on the radio" and so I tell them how impossible that will be and they start to feel the same way I did with the rejection. So I say don't worry bout it man, just enjoy the music.
I think one thing that might help a lot of people in this bbs is to promote the artists here with some kind of billboard homerecording top 100 songs. we could do something ourselves, for ourselves. Im sure it would start to get quite a good reputation around the world.
Just an idea ?

Anyway, the internet is the anti-radio, beginning with the illustrious Nowhereradio,... and including all those other garden-variety mp3 sites, including the one Father Time's on.;)
 
I like the college radio station in our town but their dj's could'nt suck anymore than they do already.I wish they would just play music.
As far as the next NEW THING coming some of you might not be old enough to remember but FM was supposed to be the be-all end-all when it came out.
In the early 70's AM ruled and FM was counterculture territory.With its fancy stereo signal,no or few commercials and its cool djs with big record collections,man what was not to like about it?
But once money gets involved things take on that familiar stench.
IMHO AM radio was better in the early 70's than today in some respects.Formats were'nt as rigid you could hear a variety of genres mixed together and decisions were made mostly at the local level.

Now the internet is the upstart and FM is the entrenched format.

with cool dj's with huge record collections, and no commercials! You're right about that!

I also believe that the internet is the 'alternative' and FM is in a commercialized RUT, so IMO, you're right about that too!

Music on the internet is still in its infancy, but its already making a dent in the big record companies. I think this trend will only continue and internet music will get stronger as time goes on. The only this is that after a while, musicians and artists might tire of doing it all for free--giving away their creations for nothing. Somewhere along the line some company will come along and try to figure out how to make some money out of the deal, just like record companies have--probably screwing the artists just as everyone has for years and years.

NPR is pretty underground already, but an artist coalition that could do a streaming web site with profit sharing could be a reality. Thing is, as soon as money comes in to the picture, then you need advertising or subscriptions--next thing you know, its back to being commercial radio again!

I think it would be cool if artists could get royalties for the work they do that gets played on the internet. Its their intellectual property. Thats how it works on "real' radio. Seems like it is going the opposite way, like pay to play. And who has made a living from Cd sales on sites like MP3. com? I've got more questions than answers at this point.

I suppose that many of these issues will get worked out over time. I'm just sick of the public thinking that our music is free and belongs to them by divine right. I don't think they'd agree if we decided their cars or homes belonged to us! Anyway, lots of questions and few answers tonight.
 
Yeah, a lot of the musicians here are easily talented enough to get radio play, If they would just:

1) change the lyrics
2) keep it under 4 min (3.5 would be better)
3) come up with a catchy hook for the chorus
4) use autotune
5) compress out all dynamics
6) wear platform shoes
7) kiss the mans' ass
8) learn to dance


Ok I'm exaggerating here, but only a little. What's so great about radio play, if you sacrifice your art and prostitute yourself. Your art should please you first. If somebody else happens to get some enjoyment out of it too; Bonus!

Heh heh :) Yah Fa Sure! Even though I don't fall into the talented category by any stretch of my own imagination, If you don't like your own music..its a bad sign :p I couldn't get radio play if I owned the station! Doh!

If my kids will dance to it, its good enough to drive the wife into the kitchen. Alot of the stuff Ive heard in the mp3 mixing clinic made me yank the plug on my mp3.com stuff. I been thinking about having waldo yank me from nowhereradio too, no use wasting diskspace and bandwidth.

You guys are awesome musicians and recordists! As a whole group there is more talent here than the radioplay artist collective.

Yeah I'm pissed! I sit at my desk here at work and listen to the radio to the same 8-9 songs at least 7 times during my 8 hour workday!
Our local Jazz station plays nuthin but elevator-driven,so-called "jazz versions" of pop covers from Michael Jaxson to Wild Cherry! We have approx 3-4,"alternate radio " stations here, but they usually don't broadcast until 2-3 in the A.M.!

All I know is I'm gonna start preaching about the future of 'Net-Radio" ! Starting with
NOWHERERADIO !!!
