I am thinking of taking the plunge and recording on my puter. At the present time my setup is the following
AMD K7 650 MHZ CPU
384 meg
one ten gig 7200 rpm HD
one 40 gig 7200 rpm HD
2 cd burners
some recording software, cakewalk, cubase, havent used them
run of the mill standard sound card
windows XP OS

I really do not want to by a new puter.

I would like to be able to record a muptiple of inputs if necessary.

I would like to buy used to save money

Any suggestions are welcome because I am pretty illeterate in this game,
been using adats for years. have downloaded into puter for editing.

Thank you

dragon works. my recommendation.
a new motherboard and processor. eg...amd sempron.
cheap and powerfull upgrade. prolly around 140 bucks if you shop around.
architecturally from a computer engineering standpoint youll have a far
better system for little money.
before doing the upgrade tho' krakit on another thread reported
that the software he and i both use works on his 200 mhz pc which surprised me frankly. but it DOES use less resources than a lot.
heres a user thread on why they like it.

give it a try sometime. peace.
ps..i would look at a delta sound card for the multiple inputs.

Awe,I've been recording on a blaster for years and you know how awsome my music sounds!Don't upgrade anything!Spend that money on weed! :D ;)

you guys bettet hope I dont take the plunge, you will inundated with the stupidest questions.
I might just do that upgrade, but will my ram chips work with it, I am not sure what my ram chips are, how do I check without opening the puter and looking?

Make yourself really small and go inside!Or maybe check youre BIOS!

I will probably want to record drums and I have six mics for that.

What is up on the latency issue these days?
The last time I tried to record on cakewalk about 6 years ago the latency drove me so crazy I said fuck this.

dworks. frankly the k6 was not a good processor imho.
the new processors like the sempron paired with a good low latency sound card should keep you happy on this front. i dont get latency.
in the intervening 6 years a LOT has changed on the latency front.
best way is to do what i do. go to a dealer selling a sempron and run recording tests.
then pay him when your happy OR some dealers will let you try a sempron system for a short time. i firmly believe a cheap sempron upgrade will keep you happy. just test one out.

Dragonworks,

Manning's suggestion is solid. Haul your PC into a local shop and see how much it would cost to swap out your mobo. I would not expect any memory to move across to the new mobo, but memory is relatively cheap. Compare the cost of the AMD Sempron to the cost of the AMD AthlonXP... I was surprised when I did.

To get six tracks in, you are going to need a M-Audio 1010LT (approx. $230). If you don't have the preamps (the 1010LT comes with only two) you will need to get four more pres. Two M-Audio AudioBuddy (two channels each) will set you back $160.

For sequencing software you can get Mackie Tracktion for free, or n-Tracks/PowerTracks for about $50 I think.

Luck.

I have software and a 24 track board, I just need a cheap used card for now to start.

Well, if you are going to mix down on the board and only need one or two feeds going to the soundcard see if you can score a used Emu 1212m.

i am being dead honest when i say, i am so happy with my Santa Cruz. Made by Turtle Beach, and it works for me. just don't use the free demos. they suck.

Do you use the soundcard for MIDI ?
If, so how is MIDI with Santa Cruz ?
or do you use plug-ins, external sound module or synth ?

i use MIDI extensively, and it rocks. the one thing i do have a problem with is the MIDI drums are panned by default, and it sounds like shit. They sound very realistic though, and u can buy a daughter card for more voices. i use PA9 and latency is literally nonexistent. i luv the card, and effects work flawlessly. plus it has a versajack for Analog In, Digital In and Out. way beats out a Soundblaster, and the main reason is all the shit that comes with the Live and it's all not needed. It's pretty well integrated into everything else. i would go with it, if u have any more questions, PM me, and i'll respond within 3 business days. don't i sound important.

I need 8 analogs in, even though I have a 24 track board I want the drum tracks to be 6 seperate tracks on the way in.
