You can't make it "soundproof"

You'd need thick concrete that is physically uncoupled from other major structures in your home, since mass is the only thing that is going to work to "soundproof" anything. Since "soundproof" also means "airtight", you have a ventilation problem to deal with.

If you can afford to build a "soundproof" room, you can afford an acoustic consultant who can explain this all better than we can. My guess is that you can't.

Foam and carpet are not soundproof. Wrap some foam or carpet around your head and see if you can still hear the TV if you don't believe me.

What you're looking to do is provide a greater degree of isolation than what you currently have. It's tricky, but it can be done with patience, research, and the proper application of the right tools and materials (and a fair amount of cash). Or perhaps you're looking to make the room sound better inside... That's room treatment.

In either case, the final word on "soundproof" is that you can't get there from here.

Happy hunting.

I cringe every time I see a Craigslist ad for "sound proofing foam". I want to email them and tell them to stop calling it that. Then again they are probably selling the foam because the neighbors still complained after they installed it.

Maybe after five layer thick it might be a job well done :D

hmmm, seems to me I've heard that somewhere.:D

I tried that and guess what ? I couldn't hear the TV ! In fact I couldn't hear a thing. Mind you, that was because I passed out. :D

I put my hands over my ears and I couldn't hear anything. Anyone know where I can get a bunch of hands to put on my walls? Feet might work too, but I couldn't get mine into position to test it out. :D

Consultant you say?

I'd highly recommend using acoustic panels in a space like yours, to help control mid and high range frequencies and to help lower the sound pressure in the space. Using a barrier product would be best though if you could get inside the wall, or simply add a layer of 5/8" drywall over top.

so... is space soundproof?

Not when it comes to Hollywood stuff blows up all of the time with this Earth shattering K-boom in space and if it didn't there would be some really boring space shots of the death star exploding .... etc..etc.

Absolutely, space is a vacuum, sound is a wave, a wave cannot travel in a vacuum, it requires a medium, thus space is sound proof. QED.

Electromagnetic waves (light, radio, etc.) travel through space like a hot knife through butter.

What you meant to say is, waves can't build up pressure fronts in a vacuum because there's no pressure. :D

If you're looking to consult with someone about this, give me a call. I work with so many musicians throughout the US and have helped them a great deal! 5. Will Audimute Sheets Work for Me?

When you have a soundproofing issue – once you remove the mid range and high end frequencies, you will find the only thing left is the bottom end. One will need to remix or rebalance for the room. Otherwise it will seem as though you increased volume on your bass – and you really just absorbed the mids and highs. You will not have to play as loud to be heard. You will not be competing with the deflection of sound off the walls and dense surfaces of the space. Result of using Audimute sheets in a recording studio – dry, unaffected sound that can be manually engineered for effect later in the mix down process. Utilizing Audimute will give you just the sound – true sound minus any flutter or room effect. Can be engineered to your liking later in the mixing stage.

6. Will Audimute Sheets help keep the neighbors and police away?

Once the highs & mids are removed, the bottom range is much more tolerable by neighbors provided there is no structural noise. Audimute sheets will eliminate visits by the police and angry neighbors to your practice space.
