Ed, you should sell cars. I think you have sold me on buying a Behringer just to try it out.

I put a post on my own compressor question in the Recording Techniques section. Basicly, I am looking for more of a limiter and you make it sound like the Behringer does both well at a cheap price.

Amethh - if I do buy one and it does turn out to be crap, I'll come back and posty it so you can say "I told you so". With regard to your "history of Behringer" comment, yes I know that Mackie sued them. Yes I know they go out and copy everyone. I come from an IT background and in the world of computers everyone reverse-engineers everyone else, so this does not offend me "in principle". As I said I have a DSP-1000 plus a 802 mixer, and neither of them has spewed forth a smoke cloud yet. Given how inexpensive they were I don't expect them to be stellar, but they are fine for what I am using them for.

I would never say "I told you so" :D

So reverse-engineernig goes on in the IT world as well, but do big companies outright *steal* code. Basically what B did was copy and paste, then called it their own. Does this really go on?

Alot of people sued B, not only Mackie.

Hey ed, you are one hell of a salesman!

Just a general comment on reverse engineering and copying:
It is a fact of life in the high-tech world. MANY companies reverse engineer and copy each other. If there is a truly patentable idea, and infringement upon a legally protected idea, the courts should impose an appropriate penalty.

I don't know if Behringer truly copied someone else's patentable idea or not. Most audio circuits are pretty simple and well documented. If the fact that they LOOK like Mackies is a problem, then just notice how much Mackies LOOK like their predecessors.

When I compare Behringer Mike PRES, multiband EQs, denoisers, comps, etc. to someone like TC Electronics, I don't get the impression they are copying at all...in fact it seems as though they have struck a very practical and *unique* balance of useable features and unnecessary frills.

If anyone would like to discuss a specific piece, I would do that. I compared the Behr. DSP9024 quite closely with the TCE Triple-C.

The Behr. MIC2200 Mike pre is also the only low-cost pre that includes a high-Q capable parametric EQ. A very unique and valuable feature !

Just pointing out the way I see it.

Peace,
Rick

They were sued and lost in court for doing this. They were orderd to pay Aphex large sums of money. They settled out of court with Mackie.

Interested

Can you post a link to some information about the lawsuits and resolution ? It seems like Mackie (et. al.) would want to get some publicity on that.

Also: Why Aphex...they don't seem similar at all ?

Thanks,
Rick

UPDATE: From the Mackie Website (only thing I could find):
WOODINVILLE, Wa. - January 11, 1998 - Mackie Designs Inc. (Nasdaq: MKIE) today announced settlements of the lawsuits between Mackie and Samson Technologies Corp. and Sam Ash Music Corporation, the terms of which will remain confidential. In accordance with the settlement with Sam Ash Music, Sam Ash Music will commence acting as a dealer for Mackie products effective April 2, 1999. Other terms of the settlement were not disclosed. Mackie's lawsuits against Behringer Spezielle Studiotechnick GmbH and Behringer International GmbH remain.

Not too specific...it doesn't even clearly indicate that they have "won". ??

They settled out of court. There was no decision by the courts in the Mackie case.
