Yet another re-mix of "Chrysalis" for the HR compilation cd

My most challenging tune to mix for sure.

Very different approach this time...to me it seems to be a lot cleaner and more dynamic. And I scaled the drums down a lot and gave them more of a support role.

Of key interest to me is the treatment of Lt. Bob's horns in this mix. I am hoping that I've successfully maintained the ass-tearing presence of the heavier guitar parts, while still keeping all the nuances of his horns during these more aggressive passages. This is usually how I talk in real life too. Must be annoying.

So rip it up cuz I'd like to send my best efforts to Slack, and Steve's sax contribution to this one is beyond remarkable IMHO.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh sluice music, it's nice to be home! Ive been trying to listen for week's! .long story!!!!!:D

Truthfully, i like V4 better than this. You know i'm not good at explaing why:rolleyes: jeesh!........i don't know, V4 seem's to be more "friendly"?? on the ear's for some reason? it's just a smoother feeling i'm getting. The acoustic guitar's especially in this version, seem to be more" harsh " than on V4. This version does seem to be louder than the others?? maybe that's why?? shit!!!! i don't know. Drum's seem more sublte on V4 as well(which i like for this particular song)......Over production?? ignore my mindless rambling, sluice!:D Both sound great!!!!! i prefer the sound on V4. I have V.2, as well. V4 get's my vote!!!!!

:D I'm so proud to be playing on this. I really admire SLuiCe's writing. It's so different. I remember when I heard 'The Passing' the first time and I PM'd him and said I'd like to maybe play on something of his so he said ok and sent me freakin' CHRYSALIS!!! :D uh......

I like the mix but I've liked most of the mixes. There's really a lot of different ways you could choose to mix this and all of them would sound good, just in different ways.

I particularly liked the , hmmm..the......I guess 'chanting' vocals going on throughout and I thought the main vocal might have been ever so slightly loud in a couple of places.
 
this is excellent quality. Very good work on everything. It's a step above for sure.
 
This mix is a huge improvement over the last one I heard. It seems warmer, the parts less seperated. It also sounds (even) more professional. Very good job!

Of all your songs this one reminds me the most of Thought Industry. Check it out sometime...

And Lt. Bob.........o man, you ruuuuuuuule! :D
 
good choice for the comp Cd.. I'm going to hold off on any mix comments for awhile, and that goes for other tunes I check out too.. (unless there are obvious things)

I can't tell someone I think the drums get buried when people are saying the drums are too loud on my mixes..

sounds great for the most part.. very loud mix.. dare I say almost too much imhop.. I think that's what might make things seem a bit harsh or loud in spots.. (fender's and Lt.'s comments)

It's basically ready! I bet it's one of the loudest songs on the comp Cd.. :) I know I had to reach for the volume knob..

the vocal harmonies are really really nice.

Have you been into like death metal and spooky music much in your past???

Not that this fits those categories - buts if so its added nicely to your sound.

also, do you put that accent on when you sing - or do you speak like that too? just curious

Nothing to add except that I really like the work a lot. It all sounds great. The dynamic roller coaster really gives it life. Sax is awesome.

Yeah, this is a way hotter mix. This hits me as both good and bad. I like the fact that the horns seem to sit better, ....I cant tell you why because im not sure myself. They sound like they mix better with the added gain on the rest of the mix. The added gain makes the mix much more abrasive than the other mix though (C. v-4) .....almost a touch crispy. I do like the vocs up like this though. What is that new "screaming" sound at 2:25........very coooool!!!! After going back and forth a few times, the old mix sounds a touch too flat. To my ears, a halfway point between the two might be perfect.

Nice! Ending was phenomenal. I don't know what previous version I have, but this was so much better.
Saxes struck me as being panned too hard left, but maybe that's how you like it.

Guys thanks a lot. I just finished a 12 hour day of building so I gotta get to bed.

But yes, this mix is too loud. I submix drums, guitars, horns, vocals, and synth each into separate Main Outs, and they get really hot on this. I think everything needs to come down a touch and can be fixed in about 2 minutes. Just not this two minutes.

I want to respond to you guys specifically, I gotta do it tomorrow. F#$%ing beat right now. That may be the first time I've censored myself here. Am I getting old? :eek:

I think the vocals were great, nice freq balance, sat good in the mix. All the other elements were done with your usual skill. It's hard to judge a mix for a song like this with so many twists and turns, you'd have to hear other interpretations to have anything to say.

I'd be happy getting within half a mile of a mix like this, but since I know you're looking for feedback,

The heavy guitars had a bit of a brash tone about them I thought. It suits the song, so I assume it's by design.

I think the drums got buried (...seriously) a bit through the busy sections.

Really nice accoustic playing btw.

Great job! Everything seems to gel quite well. Only nit picks I can find are I think you need to bring the whole mix down a bit, and bring the drums back up a bit during the heavy parts.

Sounds pretty f#$%ing good the way it is though.;)

No wonder you need rest!

I was just listening to the first song on Alanis's latest (:o ) The strange thing is that the first song is soo pinned it crackles.. I can't believe they would let that through on a commercial CD.. I doubt anyone listens to Alanis Morisette, but if you do, check out the first song on her latest and you will hear the professional crackle in the guitar intro.. Way over compressed.. They're lucky it wasn't posted in the clinic..

The last couple discs I bought have some really good sounding mixes that were destroyed in the mastering stage this way. They never would have passed muster here. It's getting f#$%ing stupid! If I want my music louder overall I'll reach for the volume knob, thank you.:rolleyes:

You know the big boys are in serious trouble when the Homerecor's stuff sounds better! :eek:

Hey guys. I'm getting ready to leave for work, but I just took a look (and listen) at the Les Paul tracks, and for some reason I had the high mids boosted by about 4dB. Don't know why, except that they must not have been cutting through in a previous mix for some reason. That would certainly cause a lot of the harshness we're hearing! :)

I won't post the remix because this song has been up here waayyyyy too much already. But I think I finally got it once I take care of the guitars. Theoretically everything else should fall into place after that I think, with minimal tweaking. I'll still try and respond tonight to individual comments/questions. 'Tis the busy season again. All work and no play sucks.
