I have 20watt Edirol pair and I'm looking for some better monitors. I was looking at the BX8. I especially like the idea of using BX8s, BX5s and SBX in a 5.1 arrangement. But it seems the BX8s don't seem to be getting that good of reviews. Seems only their price is what they have going for them. I have heard that BX5s and a sub woofer performs well.

Based onthat I was wondering what you think of the BX8s and a SBX as a monitoring setup?

Also what do you all think about the BX8s, BX5s and SBX in a 5.1 arrangement?

Wassup Trini!!! What kind of music do you perform? Have any links!

I'm in work so I didn't read the whole thing but that paper looks preety interesting. I loved the history part.
But what about the BX8s and the SBX and a monitoring setup for regular stereo?

Chewie, this topic has been beaten to death in recent months, and if you search this forum you'll find lots of related threads. I won't repeat myself except to write that I follow reviews of M-Audio's monitors quite closely.
I've read everything I can, including the recent Future Music pro monitor shoot-out and SOS review, and the general agreement seems to be that the BX5s (especially with a sub) are better reviewed than the BX8s.

I use the BX5s with a cheap Wharfedale sub (100 watts, 8", $100) and the sound is wonderful. My mixes have never been better, and I can't imagine a better monitoring system for under $400... or even more, for that matter.
Smooth sound across the board, with extended range that makes mixing easy.
One day I may add the more expensive and highly reviewed SBX sub instead, but then again, I may not. My current system sounds that good.

Here's one review as an example, and you can find others if you search here and on Google:

Good luck,

J.

I know

Thanks jef. But what I've seen, maybe I'm overlooking stuff, is that the BX5s and a sub are good and the BX8s are notas good. That their low end is greater than the Bx5s but doesn't sound all that. What I'd lke to know is do Bx8s WITH a sub, specificaly the SBX, rate better than the BX5s and a SBX?

Where can you find the Wharfedale sub for $100? I can't find it less than $169.

Thanks

A Trini?

Hey Misterque. I'm guessing you're a Trini too?
Well you remember the band Kryptic? Not the old one with a 'C.' The one from about two years back. The guitarist with the blood donation sticker on the Squire Strat was me. But somehow I think you don't remember us.

I just picked up the BX8's yesterday from Musician's Friend for $299. Seemed like a pretty damn good deal to me considering every where else they were about $450 or so.

Leddy, I bought my Wharfe sub (Powercube 8, 100 watts) here for $99 (+ shipping) a few months ago:

http://www.audioadvisor.com/

I know this company (Audioadvisor) has great deals that come and go, depending on availability. I was tempted to buy the Wharfe 10" model, which they were selling for just $125, but I was worried about potential low-end mush in my small studio. The 8" eneded up being perfect for my room, with plenty of punch.

Chewie, I can't answer your question since I haven't used the BX8s. For another opinion, I'd suggest finding the recent interview with BJ (in Keyboard mag?) , who calls his BX5/sub 5.1 setup the best monitoring system under $10K. Over the top, yes, but another vote in that direction.

Over and out. Good luck,

J.

good deal

GC should match also. Brick n' Mortar
you can take em home, have 30days
and a return if needed.....and you can always add a sub later!!!

for someone needing monitors..$290 for pair BX8's!!hell yea...

BX5's $279 + sub
BX8 $290 + sub........ i'd go BX8

i'm working late tonight Overtime? hmmm maybe I'll go buy a pair...

i just got a pair of the BX8s,

friggin awesome - i previously used a pair of monitors i built from Dayton parts at partsexpress.com

they were passive(powered w/ a yamaha natural sound amp) and sounded very good, but the BX8s are more fine tunable, and can really be cranked very loud.

i hear they take awhile to break in, and i've only listened to mine for about an hour total, but I have been impressed thus far.

The bx8's are shit. They have exagerated lows that cause mixes to translate
poorly.I dont even care to imagine what they would sound like if you added
a sub with them.If you ever have the highly unpleasant mis-fortune to be in
front of a pair for a couple of hours, you will gain some first hand experience
in "ear fatigue".
The yamaha msp 5's are very accurate.I got mine for around 500,and would
reccomend them to any home recordist seeking more accurate translations
of thier mixes.
I hear a lot of folks say that 5"s are not big enough and that is pure B.S.
The average home recordist is listening in a small, shitty environment, with
zero treatment ,and smaller moni's would serve them better.

I recommend Yorkville YSM1p monitors. They were recommended to me here two years ago and I absolutely love them. They go for about $400.

When you add the sub whatever crossover method they use will puss the bass to the sub and less to the BX8s. Which is why I''d think the Bx8s and a sub should sound better than the praised bx5s and a sub. This is exactly what I want to find out. But theory and life hardly converge.

Bx8

i don't know if they'd sound "better" than the BX5's,
if the BX5's are designed to be used with a sub (and you have a sub).
i don't underestimate the design guru's and physics of it all.

but damn good deal BX8, what i hear most positive on the M-Audio's
is the ability on the back with the switches for room tuning thing.

Does this really work well? noticeable difference or small change?

the whole idea of listening to them in Guitar Center to me is BS..
maybe better than nothing, but it ain't your "shitty- room", as
was said.
i did that gig a few times and yeah, there are differences...
but then some mentioned about the switches and sht on the back
for each pair blah,blah,blah...and i didn't get that far into it.

Anyone find out if it's "last year model" sale..or discontinued model
due to BX5 success, over inventory? alot of webs still selling em at
$479 or higher.

fhk it..i went passive anyway...don't really give a fhk...
but like to read the reviews on monitors.
gearhead.
.

Ummm... bigger is not always better, right?

Fact: from what I've seen, the BX5s have gotten consistently positive reviews from pro reviewers, especially when used with a sub.

Fact: from what I've seen, the BX8s have gotten decidedly mixed reviews from pro reviewers.

Big assumption: the BX8s, because they're bigger and stronger, will sound better when used with a sub. But where's some evidence to support this claim? I haven't seen anything at all.

Which reminds me...

I bought an 8" sub to use with my own BX5s--I chose the 8" model because it's similar to the SBX (also 8", similar wattage) and because I was worried about low-end mushiness that some subs produce. The result was perfect:
a deep, tight, and punchy low end with no boominess or rumble.

So I immediately thought: maybe I should return it and try the 10" model (just $25 more), which might sound even better somehow. My thoughts went down this road for a few days until I realized... now if the 8" model sounds
killer as it is, and if I have no complaints at all, then why on earth would I spend the time and shipping money to try the larger 10" model? I never did.

The lesson for me--bigger is sometimes, but not always, better.

J.

P.S. Anyone thought about why the BX8s are selling so cheaply now while the BX5s are not? There just might be something there, too, especially since companies will often reduce the prices of an entire line at the same time.

I finally decided to get Bx8s and now it's been discontinued on Musiciansfriend. What's up with that?!!

I got my BX8's yesterday. They are A LOT bigger than I thought they would be.

For the money, I'm thinking it was a really good deal. I hope I didn't just buy a pair of crap boxes, though. I work hard for my money. :(

BX's going, going....
