Yet Another "How Do I Get That Sound" Challenge

Ok, I've been trying for five years to get a particular snare drum sound, it was basically the sound of late 70's british punk and some american punk, too...(in particular, certain dickies songs)...the sound is almost completely dead, but it's the sound I want...tonight at band practice I put a shirt over my brand new hydraulic snare head and I think I may have got it, but I haven't tried recording it yet.

Here is a sound sample, a chunk of a Dickies song (Late 70's Punk, L.A.)
It's A Christmas song :D

Help is greatly appreciated :)

Yup, I'd say a shirt on a hydraulic head would likely get you that sound but you don't know unless you try. That's pretty dry. If the shirt gives you sucky response, try using another old broken snare drum head lyin around and put it (batter to batter side) on top of your snare and see what that sounds like too. One of the many kewl uses for broken drum heads..lol.

Evans makes a "dry" snare head that is truly very dry. You can get a lot of tuning range with it too. It's not my favorite snare head, but it took a really ringy, cheap steel snare I have and made it usable.
