well, Samicide ..you beat me in posting another Erland colab...and he officially asked you...(I just got a vague "ok" awhile back...):rolleyes: I had this done about a week ago, but finally got the gumption and nerve to put this up, just now.

Hopefully I didn't rape this song toooo much, but I had a fun time in doing it one evening. There are some level issues ...and buried parts here and there...not to mention some timing problems...(while I'm on the excuse wagon). But the listener should get the 'gist' of what I was trying to do to this crazy pop song...

But...this is probably my favorite Erland tune...and if you're around dude...hopefully you'll have a listen instead of sueing my ass!!!

Actualy it kind of "grows" on me... strange :)

also I like the keyboard ideas but I wish you played them on guitar. You know those little liks. I wish the pads were also more legato playing. Anyway it's all just MHO.

I agree with samicide (in another forum) somewhat that when you read someones critique you want to know if they done something well before they pick upart your mix. ;)

I only posted one song here a little while ago and by no means an expert. But I appreciated all honest constructive oppinions I recived and I in turn try to be constructive and apply my ear and not offend anybody in the process.

Ok it's 1:30am and I'm rambling, this place (HR.com) is addictive :)

I liked the basic idea of what you were going for here. The drums, etc, are the right feel but overpowering the subtleties of the original, I think. I liked most of the rest, but maybe Fed has a point with having an electric playing some of those parts instead.

I've been listening some to this new John Mayer CD, and he reminds me of Erland in many respects. I noticed that when there are drums, they groove, but sonically they are pulled behind the vocals and acoustic guitar. Thats the formula I'd like to see employed here as well. The way I see it, a voice and an acoustic guitar are pretty delicate and can be overwhelmed easily. The trick is to augment but never overpower those two things.

I DO like what you added quite a bit. Its a Beatle-esque production. Its a damn good song, isn't it!? I just think it could be mixed in a more subtle way. I'd like to see you continue and post another mix. This is fascinating!
 
Mix, I would have went half time on the drums. It seems too busy. I think you're on the right track (no pun intended). The violin at the end is very cool. I'd have liked to hear a bit more of it.
 
I love this song. It was great. Finally a few harmonies (I would have liked to have some of them brought up a bit more in the mix at times).

This is greatly enhanced from the original - and it was pretty damn good to begin with. A great collaboration without a doubt.

I agree that the drums at 1:26 were a bit strong and busy. Maybe move them back in the mix and make them half time (as has been suggested). How about hand claps at that point? They might sound nice right there.

...I didnt mind the drum's time sig. at all. I thought the ole "argh, we be pirates" groove actually fit the song pretty well. Might be a bit overpowering though.... as crawdad said, maybe a bit more subtle. I get his "beatle-esque" vibe as well. The harmonies are great, as are your little keyboard tidbits. Cool version:)
 
damn.. you changed that mother! You even made it a minute or so longer..:D I like it. It makes me wish I had taken more liberties with my collab... I listened to both versions a few times and came to the decision that I like the remix better....

Heres what I dont like... I dont like how it starts with that keyboard sound and windchimes:rolleyes: :D I thought it should have started with guitar. I'm not crazy about the keyboard sound all together. I also think the drum mix is too hard... I do like it, but it sounds too tough mixed as is. I have mixed feelings about the little riffs...... I think I like them, and I like the drums.

You told me that you cant over produce Erland's stuff, and then you go and produce the piss out of this!.:p

I like it. I think it is a fine example of production. Maybe not the type of production that might appeal to everyone, but very good and borderlining pro IMOP.


I must say, it took some balls to overhall this song the way you did. I would not have done this..... but now I wont be afraid to take a chance on his next one...


Dont make me have to go and redo my collab.:D

sabb....I misworded my comments when I stated that you can't overproduce Erlands stuff...I meant to state, "you can't overproduce, [and have it be a problem], as his stuff lends so well to adding stuff." I know many disagree with this statement, but those are my feelings. I wanted to correct myself in your post, when another person took that statement the same way as you, and agreed that you CAN add too much...but I was too lazy to try and type something sane!!

Guernica...you're the one person who picked up on my intentions...kinda a pirate kinda feel...or more like a bunch of people, drinking that room temperature dark beer...all singing along with Erland at the corner pub. I didn't really achieve my goal..but that was what I hear in this song.

and to ..triple M, crawdad...I appreciate your suggestions...but remember (even though I didn't tell you!!)..this was take a mp3 mix of guitar and vocals...and just add on. Really not the way I would like to record this fine stuff of Erlands...as stuff does get covered up, and the subtleties DO get lost...for sure....especially with a bar full of drunks stomping their feet!!

trackrat...good idea with the half time on the drums...that would possibly work to even break up the sections. The violen (as unviolen sounding it is)...is my Roland Gr33. My intentions where to try and get a very realistic violen sound, but I got distracted:rolleyes:

Actually I wanted great sounding bagpipes, violens...and all the Guiness stout sounding instrumentation....but...I went with the Queen sound instead....!!

Erland....still be my bud, when you ever do get a listen....;)

I really enjoyed how you expounded on and expanded the innate dynamics of the original tune. I remember the original and hummed along. Your additions had me stomping and clapping along!
I have, and will, let the execution be critiqued by better recording minds than mine. However, I must give it up for your vision and conceptual addition. Solid work.

It's amazing how musical taste works... one person thinks the exact opposite of another, and they both believe that they're "right.. of course we all know there is no "right" taste in music... I only say that because.. well... I didn't like much of the re-mixed parts... but the one part I didn't mind at all was that intro... and someone else said the exact opposite... that just struck me as odd... :p

To be specific... (and hopefully constructive...) the synth lead was very distracting... I agree that a "pan-flute"-like, bag-pipe-ish type thing would have sounded great if done right, but the actual sound you used was much to "digital" and fake sounding, distracting from the natural tone of the song. I would have picked a more natural sound and maybe even made it a distinct melody.

And I strongly disliked the drums. They were not only too "up-front", but they didn't quite "fit" the song... like someone said, much to "we-will-rock-you"-ish... think subtle.. drums for this song would be an after-thought... a background accompanyment that you don't even notice until you really think aboot it...

Over-all, I prefer the original to this re-mix. Sorry I couldn't say more positives... :p but I really like Erland's songs, so I'm bound to be picky aboot someone changing them.

Mixmkr--I understand exactly what you had to work with! That's one of the reasons I was impressed with the degree of accuracy you had on the drum track. Its not easy to do that stuff after the fact! It would have been a whole different thing for you if you had separate tracks to work with. Then you have some liberty with the mix. I know you didn't have that. I just ramble on with my first impressions sometimes. I was trying to state things positively, so I hope I didn't come off like a jerk to you.

I suppose the danger in altering something that people are already familiar with is that they get used to that first version. I've redone songs, and even though the new version sounded better and was written better, people still liked the first one better. Happens all the time.

Anyway, I do find this facinating for several reasons. First, if ten of us were given that same track, there would be ten different versions made. Second, if nobody had heard the original demo, they would hear the new version totally differently. Third, I know that somewhere down the line, Erlands songs will get recorded and somebody's gonna be producing them. I wonder which way they will go, you know?

Last, I like you and I appreciate your work, your creativity and your ear. I fully expect your talents to take you as far as you decide to go. I just want you to know that. I'll make critiques of things from time to time, but I don't do it to attack anybody. If anything, I'm just reflecting back a point of view and acting as another set of ears. I always try to comment in the best spirit of this forum, yet maintain my honesty. OK, Crawdad--shut up already!:D :D

hey mixmkr, that was cool! i reallly liked the drums for some reason. gives you the feeling that you don't have any choice but to dance to his music, yet you didn't turn it into dance music at the same time. i think you came real close to the corner pub that you envisioned.

I never heard the original.

Erlands got a great voice, the melodies in this remind me a bit of Steve Winwood ala Blind Faith.

The long intro with the synths and windchimes could go. I like B Sabbaths idea of starting it with guitar.

A bass guitar would make this really rock. I sort of hear one, synth one?.. it's just too undefined and fake sounding.

The drums, in someway I like. In otherways I find them too slamming, detracts from the great singing and melodies. Maybe it could be used in a section, where everyone sparks up their lighters for 16 bars or so.

The synth stuff is cool in spots, a little less synthy sound would work better IMO. More organic patchs, perhaps even a vintage organ or synth instead. Something not as 'breathy'.

Overall, great stuff, nice clean spacy mix. Impressive mixmkr / Erland!
 
I like it a lot. I'm not really qualified to critique but...the foot stomping sounded a little odd. Not deep/hard enough? Maybe it suffers from conversion to mp3? I'm grasping a bit here. Overall I thought it was a great song to begin with and this mix does nothing but enhance it. Well done.
