OK.

I snagged a tune from our studio album. I may get in trouble for putting this up, but what the heck. This cut is from right after tracking, a push mix before going to the mixing studio or anything. Still, you get a good feel for the song and how it will sound. Doing vocal duty mainly is Mary B, the other half of my duo. This is a Christian song, just to warn anyone...but it's more a song about life, actually MY life.

what mic, preamp, compressor and reverb was used on the vox?

Great voice, both of ya. Mary's got it with holding on to those syllables like that (extending them, IMHO).

I can't critique the song itself, because those are great lyrics. But I'm not a fan of that snare at all. I realize this is probably finished, but I had to get that out.

If it's not a piccolo snare, I don' wan' it. :D

I like the song, would like to see how the final mix differs from this one.

I would be kind of curious to hear the lead vocal track solo, and through Autotune... gotten kind of used to that perfect pitch sound.

CJ- the vocal chain for Mary on this was a Lawson LD condensor mic, I dont know the model but its gold, and a DBX 528. It's a funny story, but the ISA110 was acting up so we used the DBX, and liked it. Also, a UA 1176 compressor was used. My vox is goint through a Focusrite Red7.

Kelly, it's funny that you don't like that snare, cause I picked it from hundeds, literally, of snares. It is distinct, and I just liked how it fit.

schenkerguy- this is only one of the takes, not comped vocals yet. We don't use autotune, we use a singer who can sing, not like Brittany! :) There are 6 takes on the lead vox, and they will be sorting through them during mixing and comping the best lead track.

very nice H2H! excellent song. great singing, and i too like the snare. it's unique.

i don't hear any bass guitar. maybe that's mp3. i know your done but you may be able to add some rythmic counterpoint to this with the bass line. that's just what hit me.
 
H2H is the man. And the other people recording are also. I really liked the tune. Must do more. Must do more.

bass is in there, in most of the parts anyways..it's VERY tight with the bass drum, and you do end up having to listen for it.

dtb- I actually played all the parts on this...hee hee. I save $ on studio musicians by doing it all myself. As for the other engineer, his name is Jeff Pence, from the band Blessid Union of Souls ( http://www.blessidunion.com ), who have had good radio success over the past 5 years or so.

nice sound for a "pushy";) nice and wide sounding too.... I like the drum sound, all around. At the very beginning, there is a techno sound on the drums/percsusion...and that's it....right? I hear that one high pitched "something"...was that intentional?
Very nice vocals, and a good fill, spectrum wise with your instrument balance. Nice bg vocs..with the answering and all...very nice.
At 1:57...it was good to have a bit of space...and let the vocals soar at 2:14. I'm ready for a ripping gtr lead anytime in that area...but that's not the point of the song, I suppose/realize... However, a solo section does let you *rest* from the lyrics for a bit, and I don't think it should be required, but would be my preference. I think when you go to mixing, this'll be a fun/[hopefully]easy one to do...and one you'll be able to listen to all day long, if nec., but probably will 'mix' itself, as the basic tracks seem pretty solid.
Don't use autotune...eh? Hopefully not because you think it is taboo, or whatever. Doesn't sound like you really need it anyway, but I can't dismiss "tools" because they can correct "human errors" if it means a better final product.

NIce Song...H2H... and blessed union of souls...that's outstanding...know the guy or did you just network... I have a question regarding your vocals. When I'm doing my mixing, I'm not sure how to get that upfron sound without all the reverb, that of course makes the singer sound as though he or she can't sing, but getting just enough to get ambience. Still it seems that the vocals don't get " phantom" placement that I want in the center. It's too much mixed on both sides with the rest of the mix. Any info would greatly help...thanks a bunch and God bless.

yes, the sounds you hear ARE intentional, we pulled that one out for fun and liked it, so it stuck. distrubiting...hmmmm...thats for my people to figure out;)

guns-
as far as vocals, this is what works for me. I get very close to the mic..like 3" max, and I use my pre settings to get as hot as possible without clipping it. I use NO eq going in. Then I usually will EQ the track by adding a little 10-12k boost and rolling off the bass, which the frequency will vary depending on the singer. This allows the vocal to sit nicely in the mix, and enjoy its own space. Hope that helps.

Oh, Blessid Union is like our sister band, as we share many resources and people right now.

A really nice song- I really liked that vocal swell right around 2:04 - 2:10.
Beautifully captured and beautifully sung.

Just wanted to add my two cents of encouragement. That's a great song, the girl has a unique voice.
 
...and ditto here. Excellent song, tightly played and well sung. Mixing should be easy indeed.

Mike, I need to check out your other word, as I (on a much much smaller scale!) write and record in your genre....
