hey! i have a pre-yess recording custom kit. A new yess tom wouldn't work with my hardware, right? are there reasons not to mix? ......and only somewhat unrelated- do the yess toms sound 'better'?

I believe that the YESS mounts use the same tom arm, however the arm is much shorter. So yes, it should work but the tom may be stuck far out on the arm and may cause stability issues if it is a bigger tom.
As fars as YESS mounted toms sounding better is a very subjective subject. While I don't believe that YESS mounts firmly fall under the definition of a true "suspension" mount, they do fall under the nothing-penetrating-the-shell definition. This, in theory and usually in practice, will provide more sustain and resonance which may or may not translate into sounding better.
