A friend got one of these recently and had a bit of trouble figuring it out so I had a look and got it working fairly fast. Good manual!
Anyone have any experience with them? what are their limitations,
It seems like a hybrid 8 track meets sequenser to me.
I found it fairly easy to record sound and then burn it to disc just from the manual, try that Steinberg.
Any comments appreciated

Yo Clive Old Bean:

What Yamaha unit/DAW/SIAB are you talking about?

The 4416/2816 or the AW16?

You said "easy manual?" Bullshit. The manual is poorly organized and lacking in specific steps. There are some clear parts of the manual -- like the CD-R sections. But utilizing the reverb is poorly presented and takes time and many pushes of buttons and twists of dials to figure out what's happening.

I use the Yam 2816 and like the SIAB -- but, I never turned the box on for six months. Like do you know that if you lose your electricity while recording, not only can you lose your data, you can screw up the hard drive permanently. The manual subtly tells you that you should have an UPS power supply to protect the unit.

Also, my manual waited until page 12 to tell me how to shut down the unit properly. That is poor organization of information. I'm qualified to say that because I hold degrees in written communication.

But, the unit is a good one and the sound is rewarding for such a small price.

Hey, I just bought a bottle of Australian wine and will be cooking mussels in it shortly.

Cheers,

Green Hornet,
I get where you are coming from, but I am comparing it with the Steinberg manual for Cubasis which is next to useless, I had my Cubasis for 18 months before I had a CD burned, most of the information for that I've got from these pages, but with the AW16 I managed to get sound and burn it in just about one hour so I felt it was easy, the manual is similar to the roland in its layout and I am familiar with that, so that's what I was basing my opinion on.
All up I now prefer cubasis, but thats only 'cause I'm used to it.

Yo Clive:

I see where you're coming from.

The Aussie Wine was great and the mussels giganitic.

One of the most ambiguous manual items regarding the Yam SIAB's is the "routing" of various channels.

Yamaha manual writers have always focused on the engineer rather than the common person who loves music and, yet, Yam still sells mucho units.

I could never complain about Yamaha quality in the units I've purchased. But, I sure could tell them something about writing manuals. And, I have.

Cheers brother,

Keep sending us that good wine.

Point: Yamaha engineers educated in the USA write in English but think in Japanese -- so, their thought waves/ideas/organization does not compute with we round eyes.

Hornet,
Here's one for you, Australian wine and New Zealand Green lipped mussels, they are huge, very nice too, if you can ever find any do yourself a favour and get them.
