Yamaha vs Roland midi

I recently bought a midi interface from Yamaha.
It does not work well with Roland.
Is there anyway i can get it to interface, with purchasing
the Roland one? why are they not universal?

MIDI data is MIDI data... there is no reason that a Roland device shouldn't be able to communicate with anything else via MIDI. So it's probably operator error and if you buy another interface you'll have the same problem.
