Hi, i'm looking for the "reverse reverb" effect made by the YAMAHA units like the SPX90 or maybe the GEP-50. But the GEP-50 is hard to find around here and the SPX90 is more expensive than the SPX50D that i find easily at a really nice price. It seems the presets i'm looking for are "early reflection" but it also seems those presets are different between the GEP50 (which has 4 "earl ref" presets )and the SPX50 which like the SPX90 has only 2 "earl ref" presets. Does everyone knows if the reverse reverbs i'm looking for are in those "earl ref" presets (or is it reverse gate?) and if the "earl ref" presets from the SPX50D and SPX90 are the same (both units are 16 bits but is there a difference between the two- processor or something else-?).I'd also like to know if it's possible to edit the "earl ref 1 or 2" from the SPX50 so that they sound like the "earl 3 or 4" of the GEP50 if needed. Thanks

SPX90's are about $50. on the evilbay.

Gated reverse verb is my favorite and probably what your looking for.

i know the SPX90 are not expensive in the States, but where i live, the cheapest price is usually between 100$ and 150$ and i can't use a US unit because it works under 11OV AC...
Basically, the effects i'm looking for are the "reverse reverb" from My Bloody Valentine's guitarist, Kevin Shield. which are generated by a SPX90. So,only for the reverbs, i'd like to know if what is done by a SPX90 can be done by a SPX50D or if there's a big difference between the two units?

Keep looking, you will get one at the right price eventually. Try getting a unit from the UK.

By the way, what do you call cheap? I would consider $100 cheap. My old SPX 90 is still my favourite reverb for drums.

Alan.

Cheap is between 65$ and 75$ which is the price for the SPX50D i've found.

The bottom line is if you are happy with the spx50D buy it, the reason for the price difference is that the spx90 is a classic and was a more expensive unit originally.

Alan

Ok, but are the original price and the reputation the only difference between the two?
What about, what's inside the box and the reverbs they both produce?

I think the problem is that none has owned a SPX50D where by a few have owned a SPX90, I looked on the net for some reviews, most are good but there were 2 reviews from SPX90 owners that bought a SPX50D as a second unit and they did not like it as much as the SPX90 for some reason.

Having said all that, $65 to $75 is not much money so I would just buy it as I am sure you will get useful effects out of it. I often buy junky gear for anything around $50 or $60 to get one particular sound out of it, that is why I hang on to my old Alesis Microverb 1 & Microverb 2, and Ibanez HD1000 (awful 12 bit digital harmoniser but has some great nasty delays). At the moment I am looking for a crap 1980's analog delay unit to add to the studio.

I've finally went and try the SPX50D and was quite disappointed about it.
I didn't managed to get the "reverse reverb" sound i was looking for, found the unit was a little bit noisy (may be due to his age...) and the editing menus were quite poor.
I think i'm going to forget about it and look at the stomp boxes like the the EHX Cathedral or Lexicon RV-7 to get that reverse sound for my guitar.
For my home recording, i'll keep on going with my Ensoniq DP4 which gives me everything i need as far as reverbs are concerned!

If you plugged a Guitar into the input it will be noisy as it's designed for line level input. That was exactly how I got my SPX90, from a guitar player that found it to noisy, I explained to him about line level vs instrument level and he sold me the SPX and bought a guitar effects unit. The SPX is not noisy but you have to drive the input with a healthy line level so the gain is not cranked up.

Hey Alan check out units called *effectron* -- Now that was a crap 80's delay!

I have actually seen one of these, I was thinking along the line of an Evens Echopet, I used to have one in the 1980's and I still miss it.

Not crap but long lost, I did actually own a original copycat in the 1970's but was talked into selling it to the singer of the band I was in when I left so he could have an echo unit for the vocals.

Wow a Watkins copicat! -- Bet you wish you still had that.

The first run of them (100 in total) sold out the first morning they went on sale.

==Ok. This is what I know: The SPX-90 & the SPX-50 are exactly the same! The only difference is the SPX-50 has distortion. I know this cause I have both units.

It sounds like you are speaking of a reverse gate reverb. I'm sure on either of the units you can edit them VERY close to what you need. Also, can't you get a voltage adapter if you buy it here from the U.S. ? I'm pretty sure its that simple. I actually bought my SPX-50 for$30.00 used at a music store. These units will stand up to anything on the market now!I have a ffriend who works for "DreamWorks" and they actually use the SPX-90 for movies. The effects are beautifully clear + each unit also has a harmonizer in it. It can do the main note, then a higher harmony&a lower one. If you can find either one, grab it up & hold onto it! They're excellent units......
