I post in the keyboard forum, too...
There's several reasons I dig the RS versus the MPCs and MC909s aside from the fact that I own one.
I guess you've seen my other posts about the RS in the other forum, so I won't bore you with redundancy...

rs vs. mc909
"...I don't care how "good" (the mc-909) it sounds, the RS7000 is far more flexible with the kind of features you'd expect from a pro-end sequencer.
If you want the Roland sound grab a second hand JV2080 with exp. boards and midi it up to the RS7000 .
Seriuosly if you want hardcore locked pattern sequencing ie: all tracks must be same length , tempo (no beat stretch) , meter (time sig) per pattern fine.
So you've got your 4 bar drum loop and ya wanna add an 8 bar bassline on
the MC-909 no can do.
You wanna do a divide drum job after grid recording four drum parts on the 909 , no can do.
You want full pattern chain to song convert with linear sequencing capabilities on the 909 no can do.
Want midi delay , play effects ,grid groove ,beatsretch on the 909 no can do.
Want variable sample rate and sample rate conversion. On the 909 no can do.
Slice on the 909 will only work on a single 16 step grid yep sad but true.
You wan't 18 filters ...no can do on a 909.
Eq per track ...no can do on a 909
Direct tweeking of insert and delay fx whilst recording to your sequencer....yep on the 909 no can do (only reverb send is directly tweekable from the front panel)
One Midi Out does not make for serious external module sequencing either !!!!!!!!!!
You only have SM card storage (no scssi) on the 909. The USB only works with Windows XP/ME and Mac OS 9.2 . You cannot use the USB post to back up to a USB drive device AT ALL go figure
Only one SRX slot youd get more mileage from a XV/JV rack for that reason alone with the RS7K.
Cant erase preset patterns in the 909 . Really who the hell needs em....
I know I don't (and they sound cheesy as hell but hey check them out for yourself)..."
If you aren't into twisting knobs and tweaking sounds, you may well be after you get an RS. Why? Because when you realize that you can freak the internal sounds - which the MPCs don't have - as well as your samples, you'll be in b-boy heaven. You don't have to be an electronic music producer to appreciate the possibilities the interface on the RS offers. You just have to find a way to make the tools work for you and your style.
"...The RS7000 is all about hands-on. You have 18 programmable knobs that can be used to control 31 real time parameters. The interface is all about real time control. Rather than just sit the music in a sequencer you can alter things as it plays back and record (if you want) most of what ever you do into the track itself..." (Bad Mister)
The sounds on the RS are hella useable for making beats, especially with a little knob twisting. No, the TG isn't the same as the Motif, but way useable nonetheless. Oh, and the drumkits are all that and then some.
If you wanna make it just dead simple, the MPC and RS are the same thing, the difference being the RS has built-in sounds, a doper sequencer, built-in fx (decent, and by far better than NONE in the MPC), and 20 something knobs to twist to bend sounds, add filters (wanna get that string, guitar, or vocal sound outta that bassline sample? Can't do it worth a shit with the MPC. No lowpass filtering capabilities), useable resampling features, SM card storage, and so on...
Of course, if you ever want to add any sort of filtering/modulating capabilities to your MPC, you can buy the add-on box for it...
If you can get a Maxima for the price of a Sentra, which would you buy?
If you want, check out the MC909 website and see how many people are pissed off with it due to shaky-assed functionality and a quirky OS.
No time stretch, no sample slice and sequence, no master fx, unless you buy an RS7000...
If you got any specific questions about any of the boxes, ask away, maybe I can help. Of course, the last MPC I owned was an
MPC60. I fucked around with the MC909 alot (about 7 hours total) to decide it wasn't hittin' on shit for me. Especially when I realized the shaky voice allocation issues and shit. Or, you can browse through some of the user group forums to better see what you can & can't do with each box.

Of course, if you just want a box to straight sample and loop with, any of them will work.
That's the best picture I can give you, your honor.
