I am thinking about purchasing one maybe the 12 track one I am in a band with 2 singers 1 gutiarist drummer and bassist... so this is why I may go 12 track but I think a 10 track might be fine too...

anyways yes I am also interested on hearing about this..

I think the deafening silence is due to some negative feelings and experiences with USB audio interfaces. The concensus is to go with firewire. I have no direct experience with this, but I find it curious that so many USB audio products are and have been on the market if they're so bad. I would have thought most of these companies, particularly the ones with reputations to protect, would discontinue their USB line if they suck that badly. I would say though, from what I've gathered, that anything beyond a couple of channels over USB is very risky.

USB shouldn't be an issue if the device you are using records onto its own internal memory or a memory card. The USB connection, in that case, is simply being used to transfer .wav files already recorded on the machine. I am not personally familiar with the device you are interested in, but I have used Fostex' MR-8 extensively and it is perfectly functional, and its portability makes it pretty handy.

USB only becomes a problem if you are trying to record in real time *through* the USB interface to your computer. In that case the bandwith just isn't there. Firewire is ideal for that type of application.

So - if you are going to try to record straight onto your computer or laptop hard drive, look for a firewire interface. But if you don't have a laptop and you just want a handy portable box that will record your ensemble, and allow you to transfer to a computer later, USB will be fine - as it is simply being used to transfer data.

Thanks for the responses, folks...

Hmm. Well, in my situation, I would be playing guitar, singing, and recording that in real time directly to my PC. So if im understanding, you guys feel thats not a good way to go. Hmm.

Anyone suggest a good firewire alternative at a comparable price?

Realize that unit actually only records 2 tracks. It mixes the "multiple channels" into the stereo track and thats all that gets recorded. Its not a 10 channel interface. Its also limited to 16 bit 48k recording.

Firewire interface - I'm using a Mackie Onyx Satellite, had it for a couple of weeks now and I'm pleased with it. They are going for $200 on Musician's Friend or at Guitar Center. Bear in mind you probably want to have a PC if you are going to run one of these.

Solid unit - built very sturdy. Perfect for what I'm using it for, which is recording my guitar, vocal, and keyboard tracks at home as a writing tool. If you want to mic a drumkit or an ensemble look for something with more ins.
