My current rack setup is about 15-20 years old, 8 channel peavey unity 1000 mixer, fxr reverb, audio buddy for my condensers, recording my drums into a tascam dp02. I like the simplicity of the one knob compression which I could use for snare. I record mainly to scrutinize my playing so I would rather be practicing than reading manuals. I would like to update my gear. Would a Yamaha mg mixer be a step up from this setup or a step sideways as far as sound goes?

I have one that I use for live... I don't know that I'd be going there for recording...

I don't mic drums through it so I can't tell you how the one knob compression thing would work on a snare, it's OK-ish on vocals - would it trap an errant overhit snare? Not so sure.

For recording I'd want the ability to vary the parameters of the compression on the way in, even if it was only by choosing a preset "Snare compression" setting...

I'd vote "sideways", but I don't record using a mixer, so perhaps I'm not the best to ask... let's see what others say.

Thanks much for the advice, maybe I'll just add a compressor.

Any suggestions ?
