It's Too Funky in Here!!!
The 424mkII and 424mkIII are functionally the same, in that respect.
What mic you choose is more of a personal choice, or more based on what you feel sounds better, in the moment, after trying out a few different mics and configurations.
I'd use SM-57's, 'cause that's my main "workhorse" mic, that I choose first on anything. I have other mics that I'd use secondarily, including some battery powered TASCAM condensor mics, but since the SM57's are my main mics, and first mics by choice, the TASCAM mics have seen very little use.
There's a point to be made, that the condensor mic will pick up more of the kit, more efficiently, and therefore would be a preferrable choice for drum overheads, but in the end, it's what you think works and sounds best,... which is a choice to be made in the setup and soundcheck stages, more than in the pre-production discussion stages.
I have no huge preference of the SM57 over the condensor mic, for overheads, as far as you're concerned, and I'd recommend a bit of sound tests with both, to make that decision.
I'd just use SM57's myself, because it's what I know, very well, and it's what I'm comfortable with. I think, despite all the range of sounds you can get with the various range of mics, that I can get any sound I want with an SM57, mic placement, and application of a bit of EQ on the front end, and that's been my strategy for many years, with relative success. YMMV.
