Is this a good deal? Thanks for all your time and help.

Peace.

hey billy boy.
I bought the MD4S about a year ago...it was all i could afford...but i wish to god i had saved that little more and got an 8 track. The MD4s is alright if you dont really want to bounce too many tracks as the compression starts to plague you in your sleep.
the features on it are nice, mixer and all and the little baby does have some power.
but for 500 bucks you might as well bite the bullet.

hope this helps.

Is that MD4s or just MD4?

Because if its an MD4s id say it was an ok deal (i got mine for $450 C-Stock from the factory) if its just a MD4 id say bad deal.

The MD-8 is available on e-bay all the time for just a little more; definitely worth it for 8 tracks

Yes Yes we all know the 8 track is great but.........

But the man is asking about the 4 track version not the 8 track, obviosly we all know more tracks are better, but maybe this guy doesnt have the extra money to spend for the 8 track model ( i know i didnt) so try to answer his question straight, not that it matters to me but i know id be pissed if i asked a question like this and people just kept saying "the 8 track is better if u have the money for it" we all know this......

You're absolutely right! But the mere existence of the 8 track model is what makes it questionable whether $500 is a good deal for the 4 track. Otherwise I'd say without a doubt. Go for it! But all I have to go by is my own experience, and what happened to me, was I outgrew a four track machine within a year, because I wanted to add more parts (vocal harmonies etc.), but still maintain control over each instrument/vocal part at mixdown.

So if you think you could be faced with selling the machine in a year because you want something more versatile, then it's not such a great deal. If it will meet your needs for at least a few years, then it's OK. But before you lay out 500 hard earned dollars, check on e-bay to see what the md-4 and md-8 have been selling for lately. It only takes a minute, and could save you some money. Also, give some thought to what your long term goal for the machine is.

Sorry to be so vague the first time, and thanks for the wake up call i...Sites.

Thanks for all answers

Okay, here is my deal.

I need some type of recording equipment, and i have been looking digital so i don't lose/muffle sound. I would be using it for recording mixtapes and/or practice dj sessions. Although I am not completly sure, I probably won't need more than 4 tracks, just because of the type of recording I do. Example, mixing beats, adding vocals, scratching etc. So as for the 8track/4track issue, I am not totally sure where to go.

I had an offer from a friend for the Yamaha Md4 (not S) for 500 bucks. I am mainly concerned, at this point, if this model is worth 500 bucks, or basically how much is it worth?
If it is not worth it, or even if it is, I would still like to hear your ideas about other 4 or 8 tracks.

Thanks to everyone for posting.
I am glad to have your help!

Peace.

I was just looking on Ebay,,,,,,,

When i looking to buy a Minidisc multi-track i was looking on Ebay at all the different models from all the Companys, The Yamaha MD4,MD8,MD4s, the Tascam 564, and the 2 or 3 Sony ones. The average price people where selling their MD8 for was around $800.00 or more, the price of a MD4 was around $350 and the price of a MD4s was between $450 to $600 (remember u still have to win the acution so it might be more) so id say $500 for the Md4 was NOT a good deal, try to get it for around $300 to $400 from your friend, for what u need 4 tracks might be enough though. If you got $500 burning a hole in ur pocket for recording gear you should get a Roland UA 30 usb audio device which comes with Cool Edit Pro LE (limited edition). Ive had Cool Edit Pro for about 3 months now and i just got a Roland UA 30 for Christmas, this combo is so good (for my needs anyway) its making me think about selling my MD4s :)

md4

The md4 has atrac 2.0, the md4s has atrac compression 4.5, thats even better than the md8 which has atrac 3.5. In other words if you are going to buy a md4, it better be cheap.
