yamaha djx

i was wondering if anyone out there has tried to use the yamaha djx with cakewalk pro audio 9 to record midi. my friend has a roland xp30 and he can play the keyboard while recording midi and the notes get transfered into cakewalk and show up as the standard midi blips. this, however, does not work with the yamaha djx. is this simply becasue the djx is a cheaper unit? i downloaded a user created instrument definition, but this didn't seem to work either. i can access the sounds of the djx in the piano roll mode, but the only way to capture a performance is to sit and program it. any ideas?

Yo kid, I didn't know much about Yamaha djx, but I know Cakey. If your Yamaha has MIDI in and Out, than you probably should be able to record what you play on it in Cakey. My question are, how do you set up your MIDI route ? and did you assign the MIDI IN in Cakey to the port you plug the Yamaha ? if so, check your Record configuration, so it recieve certain channel Yamaha djx sent. Some keyboard didn't automatically use channel 1 as the main MIDI channel, so set your Cakey to match your keyboard's MIDI channel.
;)

i poured through the yamaha manual and i couldn't find anything on the midi channel for the djx....would you suggest i just try all 16 midi channels, one at a time, and see if i get anything? at this point i have the source in cakewalk being midi omni, the port is set to the direct pro 24/96 (which is the same unit my friend use withhis roland). the channel is set to none, bank selection is normal, bank is none, and patch is none. this configuration allows me to access the sounds of the yamaha thorugh piano roll, as i mentioned before. the djx has little in interface. there's a midi bulk send button and that's about it.
