Yamaha DAW owners: a shipping question

Yesterday, I received my new Yama AW16G (hooray!) However, I'm a bit worried about the condition in which it arrived.

If you recently received a Yamaha AW16G, or one of the other Yama DAWs, from an on-line store, could you please respond to the following question?

**What condition did your DAW and packaging arrive in?**

Mine arrived yesterday in the original Yamaha box (no additional shipping box), with one end slightly open (nothing taped shut), the unit wrapped only in a foam sheet (no waterproof plastic wrap) and styrofoam blocks, and the owner's manual lying loosely on top of it (not in a plastic bag).

The unit itself looks new and seems to be working fine, but I'm wondering if I might have received one that's not "factory fresh"--if you know what I mean. I'd like to hear if yours arrived in a similar condition before I make any waves with the shipper
(Musician's Friend).

Thanks for any feedback,

J.

Yo Jeff & Free:

Sounds like a bum deal in wrapping to me. I'd call MF and send it back even if it costs you the 15% stocking fee.

But, if it is in working order.....Well, I don't know.

I got my Yam 2816 from Full Compass and it was very well packaged -- two boxes with a lot of stuffing in between.

I've bought a few items from MF but ever since they shafted me and a lot of folks on this site by advertising SONY MD8 discs for a bargain price and shipping TKD's, I buy NADA from them.

If you ever call Full Compass, ask for Heather and mention "Ben," which won't get you a lower price but it will get you good service.

So, if you think your unit was exposed to the elements before it got to you, I'd send it back.

Green Hornet:D

I didn't get my AW16 by mail order. Got it from my local retailer. The box was in fair condition and was taped shut. The unit was enclosed in a foam wrap that was taped and in the EPS foam blocks as you described. The owner's manual and supporting CD was in a plastic bag that was also sealed with tape.

Good luck with your new machine.

Thanks, DHN. I appreciate your input. Just FYI, I've contacted MF about getting another 16G, double-boxed, sealed, at no extra cost. I hope they do this without complaint since Yamaha (when I called) confirmed my worry about moisture/dirt being a potential problem from a unit shipped in a semi-open box.

Nice machine, though, eh? I'm very happy with it.

Hey Jeffree,

That's great that MF will replace your machine for free. I always feel best getting something factory sealed.

I haven't had a chance to do much with mine yet. I've been reading the manual and the test report in SOS. Watched the DVD a couple of times too. I finally plugged it in this morning - 1 week after purchasing it. Only had enough time to listen to the demo. That's life with two kids.

Well, as I dig more into it, we can exchange notes. Good luck.

DHN, I know what you're saying about being too busy these days.
I'm sneaking in a few minutes here and there while I try to get up to speed with this machine--moving from a cassette format to digital obviously requires some initial investment of time. I just keep reminding myself that once I learn something, my arsenal of digital knowledge grows. (Anything to rationalize my time spent, I guess.)

Sure, let's stay in touch, and I'll let you know when I locate a discussion group dedicated to the 16G. I've sent a message to the moderator for this site (HomeRecording.com) but haven't received a response to whether or not we could set up such a chat room here.

Best,
J.

Received an AW16G from MF. Surprised that box was not sealed/sealable. Manuals were in plastic bags. Unit itself functioned, but hard drive was bad. Outer box looked like it had been dropped.

Also received an ART V3 preamp that was double-boxed, but product box was obviously opened by someone else as its inner packing was ripped and unsealed. They actually tried to tell me that they wanted me to pay for the return shipping. A supervisor later agreed not to charge me.

When I called to tell them my expectations for the next shipment I was pleased that they could attach some notes to the order requesting that I receive units that are (really) new and that the AW16G should be double-boxed. If this happens, I will be happy. If not, I may have to send both back and just go somewhere else. How sad is it that I have to make a special request that I receive "new" products that are packed well for shipping?

J-cat,

Whoa, that doesn't sound good. Well, glad they will make good on the deal.

I always waffle on purchasing from brick & motar vs. mail order. I guess it varies from company to company. I don't know, I guess for expensive stuff, I like the thought of being able to return the goods, if they ain't good.

As much as I'm not a huge GC fan, their return policy including 30 days satisfaction guaranteed has served me well thus far. The trade off is sales tax and a not so great sales staff.

Oh well, all's well that ends well. Hope MF sends the good stuff this time.

J-Cat, your experience is so surprisingly like mine--thanks for sharing it with me. I ccompased and sent a detailed message to MF this weekend; in it, I outline my disapointment on several fronts. In short, isn't $1K enough to warrant some special handling, especially for computer equipment? What a shame that we have to waste time quibbling about such issues...

I'll let you know what MF's response is this week.

Best,
J.

FYI - Received another unit from MF yesterday. They packed it inside another box like I asked. I tried it and it works, so I'm keeping it. I see some people getting better deals than the $1000 MF price, but at this point a hundred or so bucks isn't worth any more hassle for me. I've got one that works, end of story. I'm ready for the fun part now.
