Yamaha AX44

Hi All! i have a friend who wants to unload an AX44. I was hoping somebody could tell me what a reasonable price for a used AX44 might be.

Also, is it outdated? I mean, compared with newer interface products?

The AX44 is an expansion unit for the DS2416, right? Adds some inputs. I'm assuming you have the DS2416 - which I think was a decent system. I've never known Yamaha to make junk.

I personally wouldn't want to install that AX in a drivebay, and would opt for something with a breakout box. This system might be a little outdated (think it was out in 97-98) and for a fair investment, you could get a nice new sound interface.

Thanks! I actually don't need that many ins/outs. What would you personally recommend for a recording project that is essentially going on one track at a time anyway?

The audiophile 2496 is on sale for 100 bucks till the end of this month at Guitar center.

Anyway, what's your choice?

The Audiophile is a nice card - even nicer price now. If you doing one track at a time, this will work for ya. Sonically, it's a great card, I just had troubles with it on my VIA chipset on my motherboard. It gets good press around here too. The AX44 was OK as of its release date, but I sold mine years ago. It's just 20 bit converters, nothing special at all. If you're still using the DS2416, the thing to get is an AX16, which is an ADAT interface. Then you can use practically any converters you like (although the DS2416 only does 48kHz).

I think I'm sold on the audiophile 2496 for myself. I have a buddy with a ton of gear, I guess ya could call it a studio sort of.....

He has a boatload of dinasaur parts to unload. Possibly even his newest purchase. The EMU 1820. Not the M one, but the M-less one. apparently has the same converters as an audigy 2Z5...it'll work. he should have spent the extra 100 bucks, in my opinion.

I am sold on the 2496 for my own stuff. as I was just saying to mshilarious.....I'm trying to get my money wasting friend to slow down and look before he buys.

Yeah, maybe he should research a little better I spend ample time researching before purchases and have made some good decisions in the past few years. The new EMU stuff looks to be nice, but you gotta get the "m" series with the WAY better converters. People have been saying some good stuff about the new EMU stuff and the sonic quality (again, only the models with "M").

If you purchase the Audiphile, have fun. I think you'll be impressed with the sound!

What would you guess the whole AX44 double bay boat anchor with the DS2416 might be worth used?

I'm thinking 200 bucks, maybe.

Yeah that's probably about right. If he's gonna sell, do it now, because it's been dropping $50-75/year since 2002. There are still some diehard fans such as myself, but many of us have two cards and sometimes even a spare, and most people don't want the AX44 anymore at all.

Yeah, this guy has a boneyard of sound cards. Some are new, but so so.
There's an Audigy2Z5 sitting in it's little carboard box. My buddy said he'd take 100 for it. Yeah, right. He should give someone 50 to haul it off.

Guitar center has brand new audiophile 2496's for a 100 bucks. Whatever i guess. I mean I don't want to manage this guys portfolio or anything.

I just wish he'd put a functional system together that sounds worth a s***
and we could get on with it. It has to be the silliest project I've ever worked on.

Some people are just in their own world. Which is fine. It's just goofy.

maybe the EMU 1820 M-less interface will suffice. It's gotta be better than the rest of the scrapheap.
