Anybody got a Yamaha AW4416?
Or do you know anyone that has one?

Is it worth CDN $3,000? $2250 American?

I don't know about you, but 3 grand is a long time stretch for me to pay off right now.

Looks good now, for the desktop like I have in mind.

the 4416 is allright if you want a tool to use for advanced songwriting or demos, but nothing more. it is designed as a standalone unit only. there are no inserts or effect sends. these are serious limitations, as you can not use external sound processors, only the ones built in to the unit. beleive me, i work at a music store, if you are serious about having a studio that will keep up with the times, DO NOT buy this unit!!!!! it will only cause problems down the road when you want to expand your studio

I'm sure CAN$3,000 would buy you a very sophisitcated Computer , like a PIII 866, 128meg Ram , top of the line soundcard and a good multitrack program with excellent plugins.
why bother with a unit which will be old techo in 6 months?

my 2c

I know this thread is old, but this information is only partially correct. While there is no dedicated effects return on this unit, you can still use it with external effects processors by feeding the effects back into one of the input channels.

Also, the effects contained onboard are great. It is an improved version of the Yamaha O1V. In addition to the usual effects (reverb, flange, phase, echo, etc.), there are now guitar effects such as distortion and amp simulators.

Finally, several expansion boards are hitting the market now, adding new possibilities (www.waves.com is one of them). Their new Y56K card adds a de-esser, TrueVerb, more sophisticated delays, and some other stuff.

Cheers.

The AW is a fantastic unit. It sounds incredible. The onboard pres are of good high quality. The onboard effects are ok. Basically this is an o2r with a hard disk recorder thrown into the deal. I traded my vs1680 for one and haven't looked back. As far as not being able to use external processors is bollocks. It has 4 onmi outputs thru which anything can be sent and then returned down input channels. The onboard automation is fantastic (one of the main selling points in my view) as I was always frustrated with the Rolands automation system. All in all its a big 2 thumbs up......Go get one and be a happy home recordist :)

4416 misinformation

Thee 4416 DOES have the ability, through the 4 OMNIOUTS, to receive and send signals (trs connectors). In fact, you can set up as many as 4 outboard effects processors if you want to....
Or you can use two for stereo headphone mixes. Hell, you can set up two separate head phone mixes since you can use the onboard effect proccessors (32k by the way!) for recording basics.
This is a hell of a unit. I've had one for about 4 months now and it's a very versitle unit. I disagree with Cave Dweller. It is WAY more professional than just a songwriting tool. It has dynamic, effect, pan and eq automation. It a very powerful tool in the right, creative hands. It's digital though, so you might want to invest in a few tube mic pres. I just got a FatMan 5 and it works great to warm up the tracks (via a 12ax7 I think...)
There's a learning curve to it because you can route the signal any flippin' place you want. If you have experience with Yamaha digtal mixers, you'll take to this unit like a fish to water.
It seems to me, based on adverstising in mags, that this is the digital recorder that everyone is designing theirs after (subjective opinion), so it's defintely worth checking out. Good Luck.
