YAMAHA AW4416 Recorder

Yo Atomic One & Titan & et. al.:

No need to get into a dither. [Little pun there; yeah, I know, very little.]

I just ran some CD background music via a patch cord into the 2816 -- that thing has more headroom than a convention of Bald people. Nice clear, crisp sound -- and this is from a patch.

Also discovered that I can record at 24 bit and play it back and run it into cassette tape through the back end of the 2816; I thought this could be done but it was confirmed by Bruce @ Blue Bear Sound.

This should produce a pretty good sounding cassette. I know that you can't burn CD from 24 bit; but, the 16 bit is so good that, for my purposes, it does the job fine.

This 2816 isn't as tough to get around as I thought. But, remember if you get one, read page 12 of the manual and shut down the box as instructed. It works fine and after the last button is pushed a nice little sign comes up in the screen that says, "It's safe to shut off the unit...."

Yo Atomic one, can you simply tell me how to hear the reverb on a track but not record the reverb until mix down?


I know it's in the manual but, Oh, man, whoever put that manual together ought be shipped to a looney farm.

The simplest way is to just record the tracks with the effect processors and dynamics processors off. One of your screens should have an on and off choice in the lower left hand of each of the function screens? Just using my memory though, I used to have the pdf readily available but one of the servers is down. Just scroll thru the channel options. Sorry if Im not much help. One thing I did with my MD8 manual was copy single pages an highlight certain things as a quick reference card.

In addition to the above rhetoric I posted, the Y56k cards that are now available for both the Aw4416 and Aw2816 at a cost ($899.XX at MF). The Y56k does use the Waves L1 dithering and noise shaping software systems. But is doesn't define at what point these are used. More snooping is in order I suppose. Just a clarification.

I traded in my 4-track and all my outboard gear ,well almost all,and got one.
Man this thing is awsome.
I love it.

BTW,From what I get from the manual you can dither a signal sent to the digital out or an options card,not if you burn to the internal cdrw.Mabey it does it for you?
I'm going to call Yamaha and find out.

I'm with atomictoyz about the UPS.
I didn't even turn it on until I got one and sure enough the first night the power went off.
APC makes a nice one for $150,battery back up and it does voltage regulation and filtering on the battery outlets.
If the voltage falls below what it can regulate the battery power comes on.

Go ahead and give me the two/three moves to get the reverb on a selected channel.

I'll need this soon as I have someone coming to record some stuff. I already have the music on the hard drive and since it came from a commercial CD, it has plenty of dynamics in it.

Yo TitanMan, AtomicFusion, et. al. mis amigos:

Just did a little "looking" for a UPS to keep my 2816's hard drive from getting injured if I happened to be recording and Consumer's Power blew a fuse.

Found a nice unit in the Full Compass catalog; just posted my salesperson and should hear from her today or tomorrow.

List price is 75 pezzutos; so, the unit will be less than this price.

It isn't much money to protect the unit in case of a power failure.


This unit will protect against "brownouts" [none of those in Michigan yet] and BLACKOUTS which do happen in my neighborhood often.

To date, a power outage has not happened while I was recording; but, I'd hate to mess up my unit if it does. So, I'm going for the UPS. I think Atomic Man mentioned another UPS unit for 150 pezzutos.

I'm going to buy this unit just "in case."

Green Hornet,

Set up the input channel.
Then make sure your in the recording layer,not the input layer.
Hit aux5,push the fader up for the channel,turn return 1 on and up.
Should do it.

I REMEMBER WHEN AUTOMATION MEANT GOING TO A HUGE STUDIO FOR BIG BUCKS TO GET DYNAMIC AUTOMATION. IT'S SO SIMPLE TO GET A GOOD GENERAL MIX USING THE 4416. THE CAVEATE IS THAT WHEN YOU BUY IT, IF YOU WANT TO RECORD 16 TRACKS SIMULTANEOUSLY, YOU'LL NEED TO PURCHASE AN OPTIONAL I/O CARD. I'VE BEEN SUBMIXING A BIT WITH MY MACKIE 24/4 AND THE RESULTS ARE GOOD. ONE THING, YOU'LL NEED A GOOD OUTBOARD MIC PRE (OR 2) TO WARM UP THE A/D CONVERTERS. IT'S A VERY FUN ,EXCITING UNIT AND IT HAS SO MANY BELLS AND WHISTLES THAT ARE GREAT TO WORK WITH. IF YOU ARE AN ANALOG PERSON WANTING TO GO DIGITAL, IT'S A GREAT HYBRID COMPROMISE. THE ONBOARD CD BURNER IS VERY CONVENIENT. HELL OF A UNIT.
