I am using a Yamaha Aw4416 to record with. I have noticed that before
I start the recording process that the sound quality of the instrument being
monitored through the recorded has not been affected. But once you start
recording the sound coming through is degraded and also still noticed during
playback. Is this normal for DAW's? Thanks.

Yeah, I think that's a fairly common thing. If you mean that your recording doesn't sound exactly like what you were monitoring prior to and during the recording process. You must remember that conversion is happening, whether it be analog to digital, or analog to tape, the sound you are monitoring is being altered by converters. I don't know if the aw4416 has particularly good converters or not, but they will have an effect, no matter what.

Maybe you are tracking too hot. The A/D converters like to see a signal at about -18 to -12 . They are most linear in that range and , although you may think they're not hot enough, when you playback and mix, you'll find that they will have a more musical sound. It took some experimentation but thats what I have discovered on my aw2816 which is very similar.

Sounds to me like you have something turned on in the input level that
you shouldnt.in the mixing layer section select input, then go to the chann-
that you are inputting and hit the select button.Push the aux 7 button and
see if any unwanted effect is turned on.Do the same with aux 8,E.Q.,and
dynamics.
