Is it really worth spending the extra couple hundred dollars for balanced connectors on an XT model as opposed to an LX20, if so why? Are there any other significant downgrades in the LX20 vs the XT20?

In addition to balanced connections on the XT20, there's better A/D - D/A converters, more solid transport, +4Dbu gain structure.

Well worth the difference in price in my opinion...

Where do you want to be? Pro or semi-pro? Will you be earning a living from your ADAT or are you a homerecordist? $800 bucks is $800 bucks, and inasmuchas (that's not spanish, just a lyric!) I LOVE ADAT, it is a tape ladden transport medium that will EVENTUALLY become out of favor. OK,OK don't jump on me people, I WILL NEVER totally give up an ADAT - I love them. However, compare the XT & LX. Almost half the price - NEW???? I've stated b4 I've been blessed to have the "capo" of ADAT repairmen living and repairing in my backyard..... from a TECHNICAL REPAIR oriented view he loves the LX especially @ the current price point. Use YOUR ears and YOUR criteria to make YOUR decision. Don't get too wrapped up tho, technology is moving @ warp 9. Don't forget too, even if you venture to HD, there are many, many, many ADAT tapes out there that will always need a place to be played, there are people that will NEVER stop using them, and ADATs are a GREAT 20 bit backup for HD - and you better backup that HD if you use it. Just my opinion ( that and $3.95 will get ya one of them thar fancy coffees, grandeeee size!), the XT the LX and yes the Queen Mum M20 are all FABULOUS in their respective niches. Good luck & burn em hot-hot-hot.

I think if you're going to use the analog I/O then the extra $ for the XT20 is well worth it. I use 2 LX20s, but use the digital I/O exclusively. While there are, of course, differences in the digital I/O between the two units ... this is been a good choice for my needs. On the other hand ... I've also had my share of transport problems which I'm not sure I would have had if I had gotten XT20s ... but to repair that problem cost me around $100 total ... so it hasn't been too bad yet.
I think taking the extra $ and sinking it into a decent digital board (if you like those) is a good option. My opinion, of course.
