Sorry if this has been covered, but when I search "XP" I get an error that the search string is too short.

I want to upgrade to XP to go with my new Sonar 2.0 I just ordered :) Now, I remember browsing through some posts a while back about how XP Pro was somehow superior to XP for recording purposes, but I can 't find those old threads. Anyone have any advice? Is XP Pro worth the dough. I gotta know.

Im assuming your talking about XP home version and XP Pro.
Go with the Pro version. Rock solid !!

Thanks, but what do you mean? I figured that XP Pro was the same basic operating system but with some more bells and whistles. Are you saying that it is fundamentally different, and more stable that XP Home?

Hey neirbo!

XP Pro is an OS that is capable of running a network of pc's while XP Home is an OS that is intended for....well...the home. As in one pc. I've had good experiences with both. Hope that helps....

XP Home supposedly has a slightly different kernel. It does not have additional networking capabilities (log on to a Doman) and lacks multiprocessor support.

It also defaults to FAT32 when installing - you have to tell it to use NTFS.

If you are using Windows 2000 now , I would just upgrade to XP Pro, not Home.

XP Home and Pro are the same, except for a few features. You can see a comparison chart here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/choosing2.asp

The difference in features should not affect recording in any way, so if you are paying for the retail version of XP it would make more sense (to me) to get XP Home. I have XP Home and its default file system during install was NTFS.

That's not entirely true as Pro offers SMP support, which could affect your audio work in a substantial way.

You are right, I overlooked that. I should revise and say if you have only one CPU then there should be no difference between the two versions for recording purposes.

mcr - If you have two cpu's, then it affects positively. I you have one cpu, there's no affect.

Isn't Direct Sound a Microsoft API? If so, I would think XP handles it better than any prior OS.
