Hi and help,
I have two great pc's, both with xp home. this one is internet pc, the other is strictly for my music room. I have connected them via eithernet cable. I set them up per the instructions, everything works great. I can share files from either direction.
Now for the problem. When I shut down pc's, and next time I try to connect, I can only get from this one to the music one. To get the music one to see this one, I have to uninstall the eithernet card in it and reinstall it again to get the communications back. Then, the auto new hardware found stuff fixes it right up.

Anyboby got any ideas??
thanks,
rick

You running Zone Alarm or some other firewall in there?

i have norton running here, but turned that off, and also got rid of my desktop password.. no change..

If you are connected with a cross over cable (which is what just two machines need) you need to see if you can ping the other computer. That way you know it is "talking". Short of uninstalling your network card, you can disable it first, and then "enable" it. That is the same as restarting usually.

To ping. Open up a command prompt. Start>Run>command

Type "ping 192.168.x.x" (without quotes, and substitue the x's for the last two/four sets of numbers) If you get a reply, your Netork card is working. Do this for both sides.

To disable your card. Right click on "My network places" and go to "properties." Under "Local Area Connection", right click, and "disable". Then "Enable" to turn it back on.

If that doesn't work, it is a software issue, or we need more information.

A similar problem happened to me. It sounds like your XP firewall is enabled. Are you going through a router? Is your router firewalled? If it is, you should be okay to disable the XP firewall. It worked for me. Sorry that I can't tell you the exact path since I'm at work now. I'll try to post something after work.

well, i've got nortin antivirus turned off, i have zone alarm but also turned it off. I can see both green led's on, one steady, one blinking, and i see the numbers going up in the window where you look at them. i'm using a reltek card in each pc, with the crossover wire connection.
It works only when I remove it and readd it in. it won't work if just left on.
hope this helps explain,
thanks for your help,
rick
