XLR to USB Mic: Not working

Hi there, I'm new to microphones and have a problem connecting a mic to my computer.
I have the Shure 809 Omnidirectional Condenser Mic with preamp. It outputs to XLR so I bought a XLR to USB converter. When I plug it into my computer, it registers as a "USB PnP Sound Device" and doesn't seem to be recording anything.

I tried using it in audacity and again nothing, except when I put it on the table and hit the table, it seems to recognize a very, very small input.

What's going on and what can I do?
Anything help is greatly appreciated!

Is the battery in the mic any good? If not, you need to supply phantom power, and I doubt that the USB converter does that (USB phantom power really depends on the computer's ability to provide the voltage over its USB connection).

I bought a XLR to USB converter.

As everyone commented, these do not provide phantom power.

Plus, their quality is mediocre at best.

Buy a real interface. You can get a 2-4 channel for $75-200 with MUCH better quality, phantom power and real asio drivers (an important thing for low-latency!)
