XLR cable?

I have been buying regular ol' "Musicians Friend" special XLR cable for my studio...

Is there a brand that you folks suggest when it comes to XLR?
I have been buying what I can afford, and it's such a great deal
(7.99 for 20')

please advise!

The Mogami Quad is very nice sounding cable for sure!

I would elect to use Switchcraft connectors though. MUCH higher quality than the Neutrik. Those plastic ends break! An all metal housing like on the Switchcraft will last decades under even abuse situations.

I didn't find the Canare Quad to be all that great sounding of cable really. Only a slight improvement from the ProCo's and Horizon's that we tested. The Mogami Quad and Monster Studio Pro 1000 were the only two cables out of about 18 different brands that really had a "sweet" sound to them.

Of course, Switchcraft connections are best! :) There full metal housing just outlast anything plastic. The only advantage I have ever seen in a Neutrik connector is a better strain relief. But, I don't make it a habit to have to lift 100 lbs of weight with my XLR connectors! LOL The Switchcraft strain relief is QUITE adequate, and only requires a quick check maybe once a year for proper tightening.

B.L.U.E. Kiwi quad cable. I got 4 of them slightly used (they used them for Guitarmageddon) for $19 each, and they are just lovely.-Richie
 
Is it bad that I use the "Musicians Friend" cable? It's all I can afford right now, and I have a whole bunch of it.

In the scale of importance, if you have solid clean connections, it is at the bottom of importance.
A trip around the setup with a can on Deoxit and a clean cloth once in a while is a good thing. IMHO that is...
Which reminds me, befor I point fingers, I'm overdue for a cleaning around here.

I'm not sure which switchcraft connectors your refering to but the ones we have get bent easily from people steping on them(We are a live audio company). I'm yet to see a Neutrik connector break but we don't use the black plastic ones.
 
Yeah, me neither, I never have broken a neutrik connector, but I have some screwed up switchcraft.

And I personally prefer Canare, but its a personal preferance thing.
 
I always use the metal Neutrik, and I have never had a single problem with them. I find the quality of them is just higher than the Switchcraft. I used to be a maintenance supervisor in a large theater. We had many cables (of course). Our crew was very well trained in proper cable coiling. We almost never had solider joints break. We had a number of 20 year old cables with the factory solider joints. These were all Switchcraft connectors, and the only time I had to replace them was when the barrels would get bent. I replaced them with Neutrik.
