xlr--1/4

I am about to upgrade my recording mic cables (probably to Monsters). I use a Roland VS-880EX, which of course has only 1/4" inputs. Monster does not seem to make a quality mic cable with anything but xlr jacks. As far as I can see this leaves me no choice but to buy xlr--1/4" adpaters. Am I missing something here.....will I compromise a good cable (and my decent Shure mics) by adding such an adapter to my chain? Any suggestions of best-quality adapters? thanks!
 
If you can't find a 1/4" to XLR cable of decent quality- build your own. Or sell the VS box.... :)
Adapters are NOT the way to go.
 
Inputs ?

What kind of inputs does the 880 have, balanced or unbalanced TRS ? I would not hesitate to make my own cables if I had to. One good thing about XLR on both ends and using adapters is that you can always use the cable in any system without having to buy more cables. Buying two sets of cables could get expensive. Good adapters is the key, and what type, balanced or not.
 
Everyone I've heard from says NOT to use such cables, and to use a transformer.
 
The primary objection to adaptors is the introduction of unshielded points where RFI leaks in.Purpose-built cables may be more limited in the number of "hats" they can wear,but they are quieter as a rule.

the inputs on the vs880 are balanced trs, livewire by proco makes an excellent xlr to trs cable (no need for an adapter since both ends are balanced) not quite as cool as monster but it still has a lifetime warranty...

If vs880 is balanced TRS, then I would follow advice from Zophim X and use the simplest way unless you are stuck on monster cable.
El Barto, the only need for transformers really is when you have a impedance mismatch. Low Z -XLR and low Z- TRS would not need a tranformer if you were just changing the connectors.
