Xenyx1204 USB mixer help (sorry if this doesn't go here)

Okay, hello all. Today I started setting up the behringer xenyx1204 USB mixer. It didn't come with any of the necessary wires, so I went to radio shack and picked up some input and output stereo wires (the red and white ones) and since I needed that to be connected to my laptop the guy at radio shack had me purchase USB digital converter for those, like the U-control ca202 except it only had 2 input plugs then has a headphone jack (1/8 in) with two more female ends for the stereo wires. And I think I have everything set up.

I got it so I get sound out of the mic and my headphones and all, but the sound quality when I record has A LOT of background noise compared to when I had just my shitty pre amp. So where do I go from here? Any help would be awesome..

And I did do a search just didn't find anything but if you know a link that can help me I'll gladly check it out!
 
Looks like radio shack sold you something you did not need to buy, sigh!
