i am trying to record drums with 4 mics and i read some entries on the forum that talks about x-y configuration. can somebody elaborate on this for me, i'm not familiar with it at all, and also anybody have any ideas how to keep the hihat from being too loud in the mix since the snare and the hi hats are close together?

That's an x-y configuration. They explain it pretty well there.

Most microphones (except for omnidirectional ones) have a direction that they they are much less sensitive toward. In the case of a Shure SM57, that is straight out the back. If you aim that null point toward the hihat, then the mic will not be as sensitive to the hats.
