I am sitting in front of my computer / daw, where I spend at least 5 hours a day. (Down in the basement)

I have NEVER had this happen before - but my left monitor just went on a 5 minute "radio interference" bonanza.

Really wierd noises, static, squelching etc. No music or voices or anything recognizable, but really strange and random noises. Sometimes loud, and sometimes really quiet. Freaked me out..... I had to get my wife to come down and listen, to verify it was really happening. (Of course it had just about stopped by the time she came down, so she doesn't know why I think it's so wierd).

And now it's stopped.

I live off a crescent, in a really quiet little residential area. Nearest airport is 1 hour away. No police station or fire station near by...... what could have happen ?

My monitors are pretty heavy duty looking, and I would guess they are shielded really well.

I've got them plugged into a home-theater quality power conditioner, which is plugged into a rack mount surge protector, so the power should be clean.

Had this ever happened to you guys?

Before anybody asks..... no, my cell phone is upstairs, not sitting on the monitor.

I think the obvious question is....

Did you record it?!?!?!

:D

hahaha - no, nothing of that nature.

I did think about recording it..... but I was too busy try to get a "witness". But my wife took forever to get down stairs.

Have you guys ever had your monitors pick up static or radio or anything ?

Your monitors may be heavy-duty, but they usually aren't shielded. When they say shielded, that means the speakers have magnetic shielding so as not to interfere with nearby CRTs. It has nothing to do with internal speaker wires themselves, which can act as an antenna. Shielding an entire monitor against RF would be rare as it would be expensive and add weight.

You probably experienced a brief episode of "ducting". The atmosphere is a strange place. I have a really big TV antenna (yes, broadcast), because I need it to pick up TV stations that are all 70 miles away. But on unusual nights, I have picked up TV stations over 1,000 miles away. Funny thing is those nights are always terrible for local reception . . .

Wow.... crazy stuff.

I studied ham radio a little, so I know radio waves can reach long distances ie: Australia or the Moon if conditions are right.

But this was bizarre. This seemed like someone was puposly tweaking the noise, like playing with a synth.

Who knows - maybe the medical helicopter went over my house, which does happen if someone needs to be airlifted from my city, to a bigger city an hour away.

A friend once should me he could get feint traces of radio in his Fender Amp. Not sure how he was doing it - but when he showed me, you could hear a hockey game playing on the radio.
