You can usually find a pair of passive Alesis M1 MK2's for about $100. They sell for $200 new. I have a pair; they're not bad.

If anything, the passives are actually a little light in the bass. They are rear-ported, not front like the actives so bass response will be more affected by placement.

Just curious as to why you're against the KRK's?

I've heard a few different KRK models and they just sound very "KRK".... if that makes sense.

I may forgo the whole passive idea and look for something active for more options...
