I am looking to buy an affordable bass that will deliver a quality sound. It will be used primarily for recording rock, fusion, and jazz type music. Here are some that I ran down in my price range.

Yamaha RBX170

ESP B104

Peavey Millennium BXP 4-String

ESP B154FM

Anyone had any experiences with the above?

Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,

no p-bass? im hurt.

and does it have to be new? you can score a decent used bass in that range used.

try a p-bass, i play all those styles you mentioned. it hasnt failed me yet.

i did find my dream bass yesterday at gc though, a fender usa p-bass. it was a pretty cherry red color. mmm...played so nice.

id say find your nearest gc, since thats what musciansfriend is, and try the basses out, and pick a winner.

Oh no, I love the P bass sound. I just did not think that I would find one in the price that was decent. I don't like Epiphone or Squier and can't afford a USA P. I have looked very hard at the Essex P but I am skeptical even though many swear by them.

Thanks for the help. I will keep looking and saving as well.

Peace,
vp

Try a used Washburn XB200. It's cr@p live but records very sweetly for the price (i.e. almost nothing). My comparisons are with a Rick 4003, a G&L and a Manson custom. They're all in a different league but value for money the w'burn is cool.

I don't know if they make them anymore, but I bought a Peavey Milestine II bass in 1999 and It is great! It's a Fender P- bass copy that I payed $225 for it new.

Would any of the afore mentioned bass' or other bass' in their general price range deliver a good reggae bass sound (i.e. more of a bassy sound than a trebely sound)? I don't need to hear every definition of every note crystal clear, I'm more concerned with a good deep bass sound.

Definitely not the Squier or the Yamaha. Relatively, possibly the Peavey, but getting a good deep bass sound (as opposed to the mid range which anyway is all you hear from a bass without good quality amp and speakers) is not really the province of cheap basses.

Yamaha is about the only bass I'd look at in that price range. You made a good decision.

Peavey is pretty solid in that price range, and Ibanez are Fender are ok, but hit and miss.....
