Writing Music for Film, need more orchestral samples.

im getting into writing music for film and composing using an orchestra. currently i have garritan personal orchestra which is good but its lacking some samples that i would like. choirs,percussion, certain string and brass techniques that are not in there, stuff like that.
my budget is of course pretty tight :)

should i spring for east west silver edition or will that be pretty similar to garritan??

should i get a stand alone sampler such as kompackt and then buy some individule sample libraries to use?? what are the quality of these sample cds you can buy compared to say garritan??

lol, i know this doesnt answer the question, but im in the same boat as you (wanting those kinda samples.)

sometimes i just make my own samples from, lets say, a mozart piece...

I'll find that "sound" that i want, chop that note, export as a .wav, and viola!
perfect quality sample!

I would look at the East/West sample products for what you are after.... Voices of the Apocolypse, East/West Orchestra Gold is excellent.. unfortuantely EW and budget do not mix. I have Garritan and honestly I think it is better for most everything than EWQLS. There are a very few things EW Silver does better... they have a great legato violin section and a pretty decent F Horn section. But garritan has them totally beat in most everything else IMO. Garritan's brass, organs, pianos, melodic percussion, and woodwinds put EW Silver to shame.

Other I don't like: Halion String Edition, Edirol Orchestral, Orkestra that comes with Reason

Others I haven't tried: MOTU symphonic, EMU Modern Orchestra, IK Multimedia Miroslav Philharmonik

If you are looking for very specific things, there is always Kontakt and Giga where you can mix and match libraries.

I use the MOTU Symohinic instrument and it kicks ass, but I dont htink its going to have the chior sounds he is looking for, (I use the reason vocal texture refil for that) But as far as any instrument you could possibly want... its the best, unless you want to spring for gigastudio and the $1000 vocal package upgrade.

**EDIT: the gigastudio vocal package is JUST vocal textures, if you wanted gigastudio violins, thats another 1000 bucks. basically its $1000 for each instrument you want to add, but if your doing this professionally its worth it. next best is MOTU and its much cheaper:) **

Okay after reading around a bit and looking at your suggestions Kompakt looks like it might be for me. ive read that the sample library that comes with it is very good and better than the more expensive Kontakt. is that true??
i dont record my own samples and am not really in need of all the editing functions of Kontakt.

definalty looks like a better bet than EW silver edition. means i can add lots of sample librarys down the line which i will be doing.

sound good?

Does Kontakt contain samples within itself or do we have to load them manually?
I'm trying very hard to get a sample for an Indian instrument but no success as of yet.

kontakt and kompakt come with gigabytes of sample librarys included. you can also load your own samples and sample cds into them. if thats what you ment.
 
I'm another happy GPO user......lotta bang for the buck. For Choirs, I use Best Service Pro Samples Vol 13, "Choirs from Classical Choir and Hallelujah". You know, there's nothing like some good halelujahs in the middle of a good death metal song. :p
For strings, aside from GPO, I use Dan Dean's "Solo Strings". Very Nice.
 
+1 for GPO, but it does indeed lack some stuff. I think the horns are decent at best, and the percussion section is very basic. Most the solo instruments are meh, but I absolutely love the solo english horn and flute.
 
The Orchestra expansion card for the Roland XV series synths is pretty good, but of course you'd need an XV synth to use it. Has many different techniques like trills, glissandos, various pizzis etc.
 
If you're looking for purely orchestral stuff, some of the VSL stuff can't be beat - I use a portion of their libraries with Gigastudio (buying more as I can afford it), but I think the key is to not get stuck on one particular library - you'll probably find there's certain things from your GPO that you'll always go back to, or that one Dan Dean string sample you always use, etc...
The VSL performance stuff is pretty damn good though - but be prepared to shell out HUGE $$$ :(
If you buy Gigastudio Orchestra 3, it comes with a fair amount of VSL - the basic articulations for an orchestra... I believe Kontakt does as well.
 
okay i want EVERYTHING!! :D

i just found i can get gigastudio orchestra for about £180 using my educational discount :eek:

but seeing as i only have one dedicated music PC im not sure if thats a beter idea than KompaKt (which i can get for about £60 by the way :) )

ive heard running Giga on one PC is not the best idea ever.
any suggestions??

I cant vouch for Giga but I use both Kompakt and Kontakt 2. The trend is more and more for these samplers to read other formats. Kontakt 2 reads virtually all of them even giga samples.
Things tend to load down a computer quick when you are running lots of tracks with many plugs and effects. If I could afford it and I were serious into film music I would have two computers locking running adat smux between them so you could get 24/96,or standard adat at 24/48.
Kompakt is a lot lighter cpu wise and sounds great as well.Kontakt 2 comes with tons of orchestral samples from the box and has some really good articulations built into them.

In a word... yes, but the orchestra add ons you can get for giga studio blow it away. But IMO giga is infact thebest, I just cant afford it :)

are there more and better orchestra samples with Kontakt than come with Kompakt?

if so is it worth the extra money to buy kontakt instead of kompackt
 
Motu is great. Horns and strings real nice. But cyanide is right, not great choir sounds.
 
I( got a great price on Kontakt 2 academic version was only 200 usd from academic superstore and comes with a 14 gig library! Yes you read that right.14gb. Last time I checked that was the most extensive sample library offered by anyone with the purchase of K2. Many of the samples are from East Coast sounds. Most of this library is orchestral and it all sounds good.
Many of the sounds are scripted and with this you can by simply pushing a mapped key get legato or staccato or whatever you want. Add the extensive tweaking abilities and the convolution reverbs and you have a sampler second to none. I would spend a few more euros or dollars and get the Kontakt. It has more than you will probably ever need but its nice to know you have the horsepower under the bonnet or hood.
Electronic musician gave the samle award to giga again, but that was I think mainly because there were some bugs which have now mostly been corrected. If you buy it get the latest online update 2.1.
