You may be on to something there.
33 bids from a dozen or so bidders, $946 final price for a 2 track reel to reel.
What year was this machine made?

Is anyone out there tracking the level of these tape recorder sales so we can see a graph or chart with the data so to see if there is an upwards, downwards, increase or decrease interest and such?

No "chart" here but I've been following the vintage Analog market on eBay for a few years, mostly TASCAM and TEAC and some others, like TUBE preamps etc and even cassettes, and noted a GENERAL price trend going up, especially on the MINT and NIB items. I've seen, not too long ago, a mint 388 (TASCAM) go for close to $1000 for example. At the same time, some of these machines end lower than expected. However, I'm seeing a general price trend on the up, as well as popularity and demand ... all on the up! I'm not sure of the year of that particular machine tho ... But I'll tell you one thing, that it's a potentially very fruitful market for someone or some company who'd refurbish these decks and re-sell them. TASCAM/TEAC could infact do this and open up a branch that deals with exactly this type of work and make some nice money off of refurbishing these decks and even mixers. Add to this a nice 90 day Warranty and you have something there. It'd be a nice way for TEAC to get back its respect, in a sense. I really don't think they could lose financially. I see the ANALOG market coming back in a strong way and prices going up.

Here's another one:

Please feel free to post YOUR finds here, whatever they may be. Hey, if you find something cool, on ebay, that's getting enormous amount of bids and/or ends at a substantial amount of $$ then by God post the link here! Perhaps we can make this the official thread for good examples of how "vintage" Analog's doing ... Reel to reel machines, cassettes, portastudios, mixers etc ... OK?? COOL!! :)

It's the same two guys having a bidding war on both items. Really strange. :) Why are the so desperate for these exact reels?

Probably for the same reason Baseball cards go for insane amounts of money by collectors trying to complete a collection.

These empty reels sold for about 12 bucks when they were new.

This is just insanity being displayed by the bidders.

People who are more concerned with looking at their equipment then actually using it, I suspect.

Cheers! :)

those dudes are retarded. Must be dorky retarded collector types. About a month ago I paid $300 for a 1/2" tube ampex two track. Now that was a deal.

Nice score!

What kind of condition was/is it in?

Which model is it?

Cheers! :)

I'm looking at the bidding war on that TEAC 4 channel,

the one right before the last bumped the bid from $465 to $662 at one minute before auction ending.

The winning bidder got in 12 seconds before the end.

Damn, these last 2 people were either seriously watching this thing or the one who bumped it up $200 was a shill (I'm not sure if I'm spelling shill correctly)

Regarding keeping this thread going for this data - maybe we should post the make/model and ending price because I think those ebay things are deleted after 90 days, lke this:

Hummm?

Now I am wondering if I can turn my Microsoft Force-Feedback, Joystick into a remote control for my TASCAM 38?

Nah!

I'll just stick with the trusty RC71 ;)

Or you could get a set of 3 foot train engine levers, with a big lever for the stop function.

I'm watching this closely (apparently a NIB TASCAM 22-4):

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3094577578

It's already pretty high (US $510.00 + a day to go) especially considering the seller has 0 feedback and is using stock photos. Pretty surprising to say the least. I remember when I got my new-in-box 34B, that it bid up to $440 and that's a bit more machine than the 22-4 plus the seller was a "power seller", I believe, with an almost perfect record. Pretty interesting to say the least.

Good find Digital Don...the tascam tsr-8's are quick sellers too, even when sellers start them off for $500.00

www.mistyhillaudio.com is a great resource for the old, great stuff, you could build a castle with all the U47s he's got. (even has an old EMI REDD fully tube mixing desk...hate to know what he's selling it for)
