See if the Windows mixer has something wrong checked or the wrong sound card selected , etc...

in windows volume control check the recording dialogue .
i dont know if your coming in thru mic in or line in on the sound card. whichever...check it hasnt been muted.

If all the suggestions so far prove negative, uninstall and reinstall Cool. It's fast and easy, and solves a significant number of problems.

thanks everyone. i'll try out those methods.
much appreciated!

ok, so i uninstalled and reinstalled, but it still doesnt pick up the mic signal. all the volume controls in windows are good too. it asked me when i uninstalled, if i wanted to save settings because i was going to reinstall later, and i clicked on that option. should i have gone for a full uninstall? or will i lose all the stuff i recorded previously too?

also, when i uninstalled and then reinstalled, i couldnt use my mp3s anymore. it said "this file doesnt have a program associated with it for performing this action (playing it). create an association in My Computer by clicking View and then clicking Folder Options" so i did all that....but what do i do after clicking folder options?

man...i'm so confused! all these changes in my life and my body...

anyway, thanks to all who reply (again) :)

If you go into the recording mixer [in windows], is Mic selected? If so, is there an advanced button there? If so, is there a mic boost checkbox? If so, try unchecking/checking it. Also, are you sure your mic works?

meese ...please list your recording signal chain.
where are you plugging the mic into ?
a mixer ? into sound card directly ? (not a good idea).
also tell me what your pc components are...what processor ?
amount of memory ? sound card ?
i need info to diagnose why your getting probs.

yep...absolutely sure my mic works.

my computer components:
Authentic AMD
AMD k6(tm)
3D Processor
320.0 Mb of Ram
32-bit
no Disk compression
no PC cards
(i dont know where to find my MegaHertz)
plenty of Free Space. minimum: 2.5 Gb per drive

Sound Card: Creative AWE64 soundblaster (220)

and i'm plugging my mic directly into the CPU. the mic jack.

thing is, it used to work absolutely fine. then all of a sudden, one day, i open Cool Edit and it just doesnt pick up the microphone. i dont have a plugin for, like, an electric guitar or something, so i cant tell if its the program messing up, or if its the computer and mic.

and i still cant figure out what to do after clicking on Folder Options for creating a program association for my mp3s. :o

heh heh...i must be a real hassle for you all. i probably shouldve taken more computer courses last year...

Did you check the windows mixer settings as I suggested?

How are you sure the mic works?

DId you check the record and playback soundcard chooser under options. Thats what was wrong with mine. And make sure you check the EV for your primary soundcard

Stockton

meese. with respect ....your rig ahem...is terrible for modern multitrack recording. the awe sound card in particular never did do full duplex properly.
it just should not be used for recording. i dont know how to be more polite in saying that. YOU MUST HAVE A PROPER FULL DUPLEX SOUND CARD.
also - for cool edit your memory is low.
do yourself a favor and at least get a better sound card.
while recording your probably hearing noise due to the internal poor workings of the awe. while recording at 16 bit it plays back previous tracks at 8 bit.
at least get a sb live card for 5 bucks used somewhere.
this rig is a bit like me driving a bmw (ie cool edit) with a engine from
a scrapyard. please - do yourself a favor. anything but awe. they are
the worst of the worst. also - get a cheap mixer - even a behringer at 50 bucks. you shouldnt plug mics directly into a sound card. sorry,
but gotta be honest.

yes i did check em. im sure my mic works because when i speak into it, i can be heard through the computer speakers. just that cool edit doesnt pick it up anymore...

and yeah, i checked my playback and recording options too. still nothin...

well, looks like i need a new sound card then. but i still dont understand why it used to work so well and all of a sudden stopped working. is it just cuz the program said "screw it, i'm not working with this" or did it just get tired out or something?
anyway, thanks a lot everyone. ;)

meese. i could suggest ways to upgrade that system, but frankly i'm not sure its worth the money as you can buy new amd systems for a few hundred bucks. also the K6 amd processor was designed before the great successfull athlon chips came out. if you just have no bucks heres an idea.
for absolute minimum cost. get a live card for 5 bucks used and replace the awe. then you need a mic pre. find an old used free cassette deck ,
and plug your mic into its mic input, and line out from cass dek to line in of live.
this will give you a much better signal chain. if your mic (what is it ?)
has a 3 pin xlr on it you will need a convertor from radio shack.
to solve the other problem of low memory...cool needs lots of memory...
if you cant afford more memory i suggest you try the demo of magix music studio from magix.de. i rate this highly because no matter what junk system i throw at it - it works and tracks line up .it seems to work on low memory machines better than other software ive tried on friends clunky machines.
you should get about 18 tracks or maybe many more.
peace.
ps..when you have more bucks consider an amd athlon or sempron with
512 ram and two fast 7200 rpm drives , consider 8 mb caches.
such a system will do 60 tracks or more.

hey thanks a lot, man. and believe me, i need all the bucks i can get...

anyway, i finally figured out my retarded problem. so for anyone else who may be as unfortunate as me, here's what i did to fix it.

1. Go into Cool Edit
2. Click on Options
3. Click on Device Order
4. Click on Midi Input Devices
5. Make sure the right mother #$@%ing device is in use.

Dunno why the program all of a sudden decided to place the device i was using before into the "unused" column, but it did. and i'll never forgive it. Ever.

So....see ya! :D

Sometimes windows starts and 'misses' a device or its driver, then if you opened CEP one of those times, it would have looked for the device, failed to find, changed to nothing, saved when you exited, then when you reboot with windows finding the device/driver, CEP will still be on nothing.
