Just had to share that I finally like the metal guitar sound I'm getting on our recordings. Here's what I finally ended up doing:

4 layers of guitars
first two - using line 6 insane setting backing off on the gain a little. Pan these two tracks hard right and hard left
second two - go through a DOD death metal distortion pedal through the clean channel, then panning these two hard right and hard left.

The line 6 insane has good tone, but not quite enough crunch for me, while the death metal pedal has lots of crunch but not enough tone. Put the two together... WAH-LAH!!!!

I am so happy.

Btw, if you wanna hear what this sounds like, listen to "Throwin Down" on www.mp3.com/psychostick

It's starts off using a wah pedal, but once it gets past that and the heavy beat comes in, you hear what I'm really talking about.

Now if we can just do something about the bass and those drums.....

I like that guitar sound. Great for a big sound. What kind of a guitar is on that? And which Line6, not the POD was it? And was it 4 actual guitar takes? They are very tight. Good job.

Hey, the vocal reminds me of Wierd Al:D Hope that doesn't offend you, but it does. I like it, good job. Now speak up to all those guys asking about a big metal sound. How'd you do the vocal, too by the way? It was really good also.

Sounds good. I've gotten something similar by using the effects send of my Line 6 Flextone I on the Rectified patch. Keep the gain at around 6, and double it. Then I run it through the Antares Mic Modeler putting the "tube warmth" up. Either that or I mic the Flex out of a Peavey 4x12.

What'd you use to record it? I mean like Comp, 4 track, etc, etc. Instruments used?

Just POD.

That's nothing but POD through the mixer (which only served as a low-end roll-off) to the puter. I could have gone straight into the soundcard and gotten the same results w/ a little post eq.

That's 4 different takes too... if you listen closely, you can hear the subtle differences an occasional little mistakes, but I knew this song really well. It's on a Ibanez w/ double humbuckers... using the bridge setting.

We're a comedy-metal band (if you believe that), and we've been described as a cross between Weird Al and Slipknot. No offense taken, he is actually one of our influences. As for vocals themselves, we were using an Oktava MC319- the compression with a short attack and medium release. We have a little vocal booth with wedge-shaped foam. Other than that, I can't really say we did anything special (except the 'phone call', which was just nothing but midrange and a hair of distortion)

That's just using POD though for the guitars... just 4 different tones (I used line 6 twice, but a different speaker sim for each), then the DOD Death Metal through the clean (also using 2 different speaker sims). I have yet to try different pedals, maybe the Boss metal zone in place of the DOD, etc.

The bass I think sounds like s***..... we just went through a tube preamp and went direct.

Drums are just 2 overheads, a mic on snare, a mic on kick.

We're about to record our full length by going into a studio elsewhere that gets really good drum sounds, then doing the rest ourselves. Thinking about going direct through our bassists new preamp that he uses w/ his cabinet (it gets good results), and maybe through a sansamp bass DI. We're wanting this to be a killer album, though. Any other possible bass suggestions would be welcome since our bassist refuses to get a bass POD.

....mic the bas cab.......

and mix that with the direct sound. (do both in one take)

Downloadinnnnnngggggg........
Our DSL is kaput. 56k soooo slooooooow.

Looking forward to hearing it.

Btw,

I've also had good results combining an amp modeler with another preamp source. E.g., the GT2 and Roland COSM modeling (that's actually an emulator combined with a modeler...).

Also, it will be interesting to hear the final result after laying down better drums. Especially because you mention that the drums + bass are lacking on this mix. I've found that if I get a huge guitar tone, it can drown out the drums/bass. Then if I bring the drums/bass back up in the mix, the huge guitar tone starts to suffer. I'm always working on techniques to make everything sound huuuuuuge.

Urgh... only 40% done downloading...

Almost forgot to mention: Good point Jake.

Alright, finally downloaded. Excellent guitars! Great tune, good mix (from what I can tell on my P.O.S. computer speakers).

Re. drums: You might try adding some compression with a medium attack to the snare and bass for extra punch. Might also try a little high eq on the bass and a little high mid eq on the snare to help them cut through. Then again, it's a bad idea to give mix suggestions given the quality of these speakers...
