Would this be a step up or down?

Right now we use 3 Realistic 33-984C's for vocals in the band. Would getting a 3 pack of either Samson R21s or Behringer XM1800s or even CAD 22As be a step up from these?

probably not a step worth taking. why don't you keep what you have and add one decent mic. i assume two of the mics are for backups? use the new decent mic for the main vocal. what are you not getting out of what you have now? are the mics for live use or recording?

The R21's are pretty decent. I wouldn't call them SM57/58 clones, but I use them (and the R11's, which I like more)

I haven't used the Realistics (must admit that I have never heard of them ), so can't say if the Samsons would be a step up, but I can vouch for the Samsons being value for money and sounding good.

My $0.02

Personally, I'd step around the Samson and Behringer dynamics and consider buying a 3-pack of Sennheiser e815s dynamics (around $110 for three mics and three mic clips). The Sennheisers are excellent sounding mics for the money; they're rugged and well made (in Germany), and you'll never have to make excuses for them. Do a search and see what people have said about these mics.

Have you considered the GLS ES58's or ES57's? Great shure clones and you can get three for 80 bucks.
