Would I need an MXL 990 if I allready have an sm57?

I just recently bought some SM57's and two Behringer C2s for my drum mics. Now... do you think I should buy an MXL 990 and use it as another overhead and especially as a vocal mic? I'm pretty tight on money right now, and could either get that or some other semi-neccesary stuff instead.

Anyway... If you were in my situation would you get the MXL 990 for an OH and Vocal mic, or just use an SM57 for vocals?

I used to own a 990 and more often than not, I used 57's instead. If I had to choose between the 2 for vocals...Id still say go for the 57's. I sold my 990 over a year ago and I have not missed it in the least.....

I say save your money...

I'd take the 990 over a sm57 for vox and OH BUT it is not worth anything in those category's anyways. So just use what you got until you can afford at least a nice low end studio projects mic, mxl is bad news.

I don't know about the 990 but a lot of people would disagree with you about all MXL mics being "bad news". The V67G (LDC) and the 603s (SDC), both of which I own, are highly regarded budget mics.

I completely disagree that MXL are "Bad News". Finding out you got cancer is "Bad News" I have a few MXL Mics in my collection and i have never had any problems with them, Granted the 990 certainly isnt the best mic they have made...some people like it some people hate it. Im not a big fan of that mic my self. But the 603's are great for overheads. As for the studio projects, well alot of people say they are great, i have never used one. But Mxl is far from bad news, there are some gems in there that are well worth a look into...i cant compare them to a studio projects mic but i can say some of them have out performed microphones 6 times their value in my collection on a number of senarios, and if you break one, well shit it aint gonna kill you.

2 overheads mics will do just fine. A seperate vocal mic is nice thing to have. Having variety in your mic collection is always a good thing.
