Ive been recording everything 16/44 mainly due to HD space but I tend to have alot of clipping on vocals unless Im really careful with mic distance...

would I gain any headroom by recording just the vocal tracks 24/96 and then dither em down to 16/44 like the rest of the tracks??

no.

moving to 24 bits allows things be SOFTER, not louder. although what this means is you can track at a lower volume, normalize it, and you haven't lost any resolution compared to 16-bit.

just turn down the gain, or track with a compressor/limiter.

That's right. Digital headroom is sort of reverse headroom. It doesn't allow you to track hotter signals, it just allows you track at lower levels, thus giving you more allowance for dynamics if you need it.

Your only solution is to turn down.

Oh, and you can get 100+ GB hard drives for under a hundred bucks anymore....the hard drive space excuse isn't really valid anymore :)
