Rock Steady
here`s a new tune I been working on with an old guitar picking friend from many years ago. He did the vocals and guitar on a little Korg portable with a little drum box and the quality is suffering. I did some work on it and added parts, slipped in a few real drum parts, trying to deal with it as it was recorded but can`t do much more with it due to the initial recording. I think its a pretty fair tune though, he agrees to retrack everything over here at my place along with some mods to the arrangement and length. I`ll post the re-trax here later on when its redone.

Hey Toki...
Bass is a bit boomy on my monitors man...
yup...I hear them snaps in the percussion...

guits got that 80's kind of tone to them...I like that...but I would put more space in the mix inbetween them...

umm..the vox....what kind of effects did you use?
I had a bit of trouble understanding the lyrics....
Perhaps a cleaner vox ...sort of btrighter in tone would help with the vox...

of what I heard...I liked the lyric...good hook man,
Take it easy,
Joe

Thanks man. I think I`ll be able to get a good mix on this when we retrack it all. He used onboard korg delay. I had to dig with a parametric to get to the vocals, and get em up where I could hear them at all above the mix well. I could barely get the bass, kick, piano and strings in due to the really thin wav file I had to work with. I have plans for it to be really wide and thick when retracked. I just have a feeling on this tune..

I like this..a lot. Songs like this stick in yer head, and you have to listen to something else or it will linger on for days:D But thats a good thing. Can't wait till i hear this the next time...thanks for sharing.

David

You've got the basic ingredients for a cool tune here.:)

Good practice to take something like this and work some mix magic on it. Lets you see just how much you can do with tweaking.

His voice/style sounds familiar, but I can't quite place it.

Did you put those pads in there? Trippy sounds!

sounds like you got a fine tune working here.

right up my alley :)

it just sounds like im listening through a telephone though.

I really like how smooth the tune is ... i want to hear this when you done..

its funny you have the same interests as me :)

stars, tornados, and the sort ... :)

Thanks david, I thought you`d like this tune. He`s playing the same strat his momma bought him in 1966. When we pick a one nighter he plays thru a Bandmaster he got at the same time.

M.Brane : I just had a wav file after he mixed it down, so I had a hard time gettin stuff separated. I wish I`d been able to extract the tracks from his machine. I`m gettin a handle on the equipment now, jus like you said it takes time and practice. I did everything but the guitar, drum machine, and singing. It'll be fun recording this tune.

J : glad you like it. He`s a good songwriter and an old friend. Hasn`t had an opportunity to record any in a long while. He did this one in the middle of a music store in a hurry with phones. Thats why it sound like a telephone :) I dig his stuff, maybe it`ll pan.
I find an interest in many things, nature's art is everywhere if ya just slow down and look. :)

When I first started getting into ProTools, I decided I needed something to practice my editing skill so I transfered some stuff off my 4-track cassette two tracks at a time, and tried to line it back up. I was actually suprised how little nudging I had to do to get it synced. I posted a Christmass tune that I did like this (remember?) so it can be done. It's a bit tricky, but good practice.:)

Great song!

Totally looking forward to the retrack man.

I really dig this vocal character....neat voice thingy.:D
This could be 1985 and British.

I may have him bring his machine over and extract the trax one or two at the time. I could get inside the tune a lot better that way. We are gonna track it here at my place soon, but that would be a lot of fun and good practice in the meantime. Danke..

Really nice tune - which is the first reason it's worth redoing. The second reason is because, like you say, the sound isn't as good as it can be, isn't as good as the song deserves.

I like the moodiness of the song and his quirky vocal delivery. Really nice.

I know you're planning to do it again, but here's some feedback on this mix anyway: through my headphones, the bass is a bit boomy. 50 Hz cut?

I've been listening to this and can I recommend that the vocal be kept original? It sounds so perfect the way it is I think you should use that physical track in the final song if you have to redo everything else around it.

On feel alone this song is a winner in my book!

Toki, one fine tune here. not sure I like the vocal effects, but it seems to work for you. a keeper. I like the bass like it is.

cool song! I like the vocals, but they need something to help them be more understandable.. the recording sounds a little boomy as compared to your usual, but I really like the tune and the vocalist.. Needs some mix help though..

Damn Tokes,
Like you said, clean that puppy up a bit and you got somethin. About the fx on the vox......gotta admit at first, I thought I was listening to Elmo. lmao....it took a while before I realized what was goin on. Does sound a bit like the cure.

bd :D

Yup,

This is worth the stripping down, syncing, editing and tweaking efforts that you intend to undertake.
It's got lots of Toki all over it which makes it worthwhile in the first place, besides being a coaxing, plaintive and seductive tune/lyric.
Nice work so far Ken, and I'm sure it's been considerable to get it to this stage.
I'm saving this 'diamond in the rough' for comparison to the forthcoming 'jewel'. Then we'll get to polishing it, dude.;)

flat-9

Not much to add. I thought the song was ok.

Lots of vocal effects and the vox are a bit back in the mix and/or difficult to understand. The one thing I might add is it seems like some words are mispronounced (e.g., "world" at :33 and "struggles" at :43). Deliberate or not, I don't know. Bugged me for some reason.

The overall level is a bit quiet. I hear some periodic clicking. Not sure if it's a drumstick or the singer's voice (a "pursing of the lips" kind of sound).

Other than that, a decent song and a VERY nice ambience to it. "We've all made a mess with our madness" is a good line.

Trip...

this has kinda a dreamy feel to it, for what you had to work with this dont sound to bad. i like the words to this, this sorta has that 80s pop alternative sound to it kinda reminds me of the mood the song hazard by richard marx sets, my wife is a huge richard marx fan. id love to hear this when you retrack it. thanks for sharing toki. god bless flash

I appreciate all you folks listening, I just watned to share with ya. I know this don`t sound that good right now, but the real meat of the tune turned me on in an eery, haunting sorta way.
I asked him today about lettin me extract all
the original trax to work with until we get it re-recorded on my daw.
