Thank-you CHAZBA!!!

I was reading this post with an almost amused fascination. Each twist and turn introduced another set of vague metaphors and wordy phrases that really said nothing new. I was wondering where it was all headed.

Remember: someone dead and famouse once said "It's not what you put in, but what you leave out that makes a great song."

I believe that lyrically and musically.

Hmmmmm...

Interesting thread, though.

I think that most people will listen to your song once, if you're lucky, and never again unless you get something across to them during that listen. That's why "abstract" lyrics usually don't work.

You said that the song (so far) is about living in the moment. So make the lyrics exist in such a moment. Describe the moment, make the listener live it with you. WHAT'S GOING ON? What about this moment out of all other moments has changed your (and maybe my) life? Use nouns and verbs more than adjectives.

My two cents. I commend you for putting it out there.

By the way...

I didn't mean that to sound as harsh as it came across. I was amused because I go through the exact same process all the time.
I have to constantly remind myself that there's an eraser at the other end of the pencil.

Aaron...

Thanks Aaron for appreciating that economy of language can be a writer's greatest ally. The title of your album "Bad Luck, Good Story" is a perfect example, it says everything with few words. I look forward to hearing it.

Hello All
I have been following this thread with interest and it made me want to join this forum.
I would just like to add my tuppenceworth and say that if you are a songwriter, it would probably be in your best interests to read Jimmy Webbs book tunesmith for an honest and open inside look at how a successful writer aproaches his craft.

Sheila Davis's...The Songwriters Idea Book...is excellent also

Before any of us can write meaningful, moving lyrics (or poetry)--like that Jack Frost poet guy--is ask ourselves: if we were a tree, what kind of tree would we be?

Think
Think deeply...
Then let the contrivances flow like tributaries into a single, sweeping song lyric.
